Oil leak between diff & Haldex?

Hi all

I noticed some oil on my drive, having looked under the car I can see oil dripping from the area between rear diff and Haldex, see pics below, what could be the issue, observatiion is the oil is very clean .

Any advice or guidance greatly appreciated

Some history of your FL2 would be handy.

If the oil is clean, what has happened recently?

How long have you had the car and was it alright? FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Hi

I have owned for nearly a year, came with good service history that includes a number of Haldex services, the last being 2024, approximately 3000 miles ago.

No particular issues, no nasty noises, no warnings on the dash and a code scan doesn't highlight any warnings

You have a Gen4 Haldex.
The seal between haldex and rear diff is via the same large O ring as for Gen3. (HR1 in the GEN3 diagram.)

The haldex unbolts quite easily from the rear diff once the propshaft is disconnected. Jules

Its difficult to see where the oil is coming in your pic.

The join between haldex and rear diff is here (the clutch part of the haldex fits inside the rear diff)

Excellent observation and thanks for the exploded diagram, I'll have another look when I get a chance and post up more pictures

I cleaned up the diff and Haldex area, left the car overnight and you can see the oil is starting to accumulate near the large round hole in the diff support bracket

I can't see where this is coming from, any ideas?

There's a weep hole between the diff and haldex seal. It's a special labyrinth seal with a void between the 2 components, which has a weep hole for leak identification. Thumbs Up Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

No, it's the diff shaft seal that's leaking. Seal leakage can often be attributed to diff bearing failure, which allows the shaft to have radial runout.

Although it's difficult to say without actually seeing the diff up close. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

So that is the diff oil leaking out rather than the haldex oil. Jules

you need to identify what oil is leaking out is it haldex oil or diff oil ? its easy to tell haldex oil is a lot thinner than the diff oil, im going to guess that its the o ring between haldex and diff leaking, I always use a smear of sealant on the joining surfaces as I don't trust just the o ring as there's always alloy corrosion where they sit ive done a few diffs and never had a problem

There are 2 options (as allready mentioned)

1. The seal / O-ring between the Haldex and diff housing. - The seal surface tends to corrode after many years and make this seal leak. Should basically be vissible around the flange. Looking dry in your case as I can see from the pictures, but I might be wrong Wink

2. The seal on the pinion shaft. - This seal (simmerring) is constructed as a double seal where one side/seal seals to the diff oil and the other side/seal towards the haldex oil. there is a small breather hole between those two sides that can be seen on the underside of the diff. If the oil drips out of this hole, it indicates that this seal is worn or misplaced. Its very important that this seal is installed at the correct depth during a diff rebuild. You will find an X-section of the seal and pictures of the bore in my diff rebuild thread, about mid page here: https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic29814-15.html

The label under your rear diff is to me an evidence that the unit has been replaced at a stage, so both haldex seal and pinion seal may been replaced / disturbed at a point. I have never seen this label on any of the 20 diffs I have rebuilt...
