Best off road mods

Just wondering what the consensus is for the best initial mods to get an FL2 off road ready (other than tyres)?
Thanks.

The fuel tank is the lowest point of the car and can drag on the ground. I fitted a Mantec tank guard as well as their sump guard extension but they are hard to come by now. When you get an FL2 check that the air cleaner box drain valve is in place. If you take the car into water if this isn’t there you can suck water into the air intake - hydrolock!!

Coming off the back of BossBob's reply, an old video that we did regarding the air box one way valve:

MuddyMods sell an improved one way valve for the airbox which should be better than what we used as we still get water/mud into our airbox.

A tank guard is a must if you want to do anything more than the odd bit of green laining:

A bit of added ground clearance never goes a miss with the Freelander 2:

A decent set of all terrain tyres as you've said is a very good starting point. Something that is overlooked is just having a well maintained Freelander 2 in the first place. A modified Freelander 2 isn't much use if it breaks down in the middle of a green lane due to a lack of maintenance Very Happy .

Thanks very much, that’s really helpful.

How often do the tank guards come up secondhand?

Don't know about the best but the tubular rock sliders saved my sill.
My front right tyre went off the side of a boulder as the boulder rolled.
Car went down so quickly it pinched the tyre between a rock and the rim, putting a hole in the sidewall of the tyre I could get my thumb through!
When I checked there was also a big dent in the bottom of the slider.

They come up 2nd hand on the groups every now and then. To the most part people fit and forget about them so sometimes they don't realise the guard is still on when they sell their car Laughing . Although if someone is leaving the off-roading scene they will often "revert" their car back to standard and sell off all the other bits. Although sometimes there isn't much of a saving to be had between used and new seeing as there isn't much pre-owned stuff floating around to lower the costs Smile . https://www.youtube.com/@scottandalana4x4

Don't think you can get them anymore, unless you can get a set off wreckers.

Just get under the car with a ruler, packing cardboard & masking tape.

Make a template, & obviously with clearance tolerances, & get it cut up & folded up out of 5083 alloy 6mm aluminium plate. Or ballistic plate H131. If you really want to get the last grain of rice of strength. Any bending/folding do across the rolling mill grain, not parallel* of the aluminium plate.

You will have a far better product.

Disclaimer: I was in the aluminium industry for 17 years.

P.S. Aluminium specific gravity is about 2.7
So a 1 metre square sheet, by 1mm thick is about 2.7 kg. So 6mm thick is about 16.2 kg. 500 kg payload - 16.2 kg... another item reducing your payload.

Not to forget that this is over the rear axle which has a pathetic axle load limit.

* Half way down this page I mention rolling mill grain. https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic35376.html Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Now that's a good question!
As the Freelander has been out of production for so long now a lot of what was readily accessible, has also gone out of production.
I've just looked on Muddy Mods at there range and there's not even 25% of what there used to be.
I think I got them from here;
lrparts.net
But they don't seem to be available any more.

While I don't think there are plans to bring the rock sliders back this side of Christmas, Warren at MuddyMods hasn't forgot about Freelander 2 protection Smile. The problem is with any small business, to make something affordable they need to be made in quantity. I think he also wants to redesign them before they come back to make them better. Very Happy

One thing that could help push things along is if a thread was made with a bunch of people saying that they want MuddyMods rock sliders. Who knows, that might make them jump up the ladder in terms of priority. Smile

The Muddy Sales Page on Facebook could be a great place to keep your eyes open to for off road parts: https://www.facebook.com/groups/muddysales https://www.youtube.com/@scottandalana4x4
