May as well buy a Ford Focus.

Not yet, I need to save another 6 grand which will be October, due to age I need a high driving position, the Focus seat is too low, it's that or a Peugeot 3008 hybrid. My present car a Mazda CX9 is longer than a a FFRR and is a pain to park and manoeuvre round the tight village streets and it also doesn't have power door mirrors which I didn't think would be a problem but is when they need folding in a narrow street with cars parked on the offside. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

New Evoques seem to be good at residuals, but, Engine reliability with the Inginium Engine is not so good, its a flawed Peugeot design, copied into virtually all today's manufacturers vehicles. USA web commentators like Hoovy, The Wizard, Sam Crac, Dave's Auto Shop, all have the same theme. I could comment on more, but sometimes keeping what one knows can be one's answer. I have a twenty three year old Disco 2 TD5 that needs a rear chassis repair now, but in fourteen years it has only needed servicing and tyres, etc. Most of my time with it was towing a 3.5 ton trailer load, which no FL2 can do, nor Evoque, or Disco 3. Your choice, I hope I have assisted your choice in some small way.

I remember 1960's cars and engines being good for about 60K miles at which point oil consumption and rust saw them on the road to the scrap heap.

Better design, production machining, and lubricants(?) for transmissions and engines, plus decent quality metal, design, and finishing stopped the bodywork disappearing from under the paint, and cars were good for an easy 100k miles. As far as I recollect this happened in the 1990s, and the Company Car Life changed upwards to reflect this.

As far as FL2 replacements go, a new Hyundai Santa Fe passed me yesterday. With its high driving position and large windows I may have a new possible car to look at if I ever am tempted out of my FL2.

PS I have had Evoques as loan cars from LR, as my wife observed, it's a bit like sitting in a letter box and peering out through the slot. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I had a loan one for a day, it was like sitting in a black hole.
Compared to the Freelander the windows are so small and the driving position was lower.

The old boiler is still running her 1996 300TDi Defender to tow The Horse around with. Recently I put a new clutch, starter motor, lift pump, and new shocks all round. All those were the original parts that it left the factory with wonder if the replacements will last as long??? 2013 FL2 XS.

I had same thought Bob…..if I remember correctly Richards started doing the galvanized chassis in about 2013/14…..for about £2200……since mechanically thé Disco was ….not new but certainly near new condition despite the miles…..but I preferred driving the FL2 especially long distance….80mph in the D2 was 3000 revs/min…..just starting to sound strained….but 80 mph in FL2 = 2000rpm….a fast tick-over !
So I disposed of the old bus…….should have stripped it down & checked for wear….sold thé bits. Turbo was original & no wear……Mobil 1 from new & centrifugal filter & main oil filters always changed together.
But as you say several years of happy motoring….13 for me……. FL2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto MY 2012— current

High Driving Position, Big Windows, Looks like a Land Rover, what's not to like ---
well perhaps it lacks a little torque for a Big SUV, although the PHEV has a larger (90bhp) rear electric motor and may just make the FL2 SD4's performance.

Petrol engine Evoque, E-Pace after late 19 early 20 are have mods done and engine is supposed to be better. Strange that we hear of all maladies but other manufactures make a good job of keeping the problems quiet. eg some Audi models have had engines give in. Masses of Porche suv's have been problematic. Our Freelander is now 12 years old with 92,000 on the clock and is brilliant. The wife prefers it because of the high seating but prefers our petrol E-Pace for being such a great drivers car and the fact the sat nav screen can be on its large centre screen and also on the screen in front of the steering wheel is a great plus for us old folk when dropped into a busy city at rush hour. The Freelander sat nav does seem to update itself mostly and also doesn't have the nonsense stop start of the jag. Jag is 20 reg and we get it serviced every year and not the other nonsense of a two year service interval. Plus it has oil in thin as dishwater so maybe that won't help longevity but ours hasn't had one little glitch at all , absolutely nothing wrong!! So my advice- keep the Freelander and buy yourself an Evoque, best of both worlds!!

I saw a new Dacia Bigster the other day, got to say looked very very nice and probably a bit bigger than a FL2. The new Duster looks equally as good IMO

Do like the look of the Bigster but there is no decent (by which I mean big and diesel) engine option. It wouldn't have the towing ability i need. A 2.0 Tdi would make that a great car but sadly diesel is seen to be the devil's brew these days and disappearing fast in new cars. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948
