P245A OBD2 Trouble Code - turns out not all bad

I'm making this post purely as it was invaluable information for me to use as a new Land Rover owner.

Upon receiving my new-to-me FL2 over the weekend, I immediately got thrown a amber check engine light. The OBD2 reader gave me a pending and current P245A errors "EGR Cooler Bypass Control Circuit/Open (Bank 1)"

Frantic Googling returned me all sorts of EGR issues, dire warnings and possible replacement costs in the thousands.

Fortunately I found a LR mechanic not booked up for 6 months (and judging by all the 30 year old Discos in his workshop, he had the Lazarus-like ability to keep them going) and he ran a proper check.

Turned out that all the codes were just electrical mis-diagnoses due to the battery having run flat just prior to me getting the car. Terminals were cleaned and codes were re-set. The battery had caused the computer to think there were issues as there was not enough voltage into the sensor at some point.

So yeah, it could have been bad, but it was a good outcome, and judging by the amount of hits I got while searching about the EGR circuit throwing this fault code, it's a fairly common problem.

He didn't charge me for the fix either, but I'll certainly be locked into the "service every ten thousand kilometres" which is how he keeps the Discos going I suppose.

Thumbs Up
The battery, again! We need the forum equivalent of a tape loop which basically says ‘charge the battery, clear the codes, run the checks again!’.

I agree with BossBob, the only thing I would add to the program would be a conditional jump to changing the battery to the biggest that will fit in tray after a couple of cycles through his 'Charging Loop'.

That would have saved me a good 48 hours of stress I think Laughing . But I did end up buying a decent OBD2 reader, so that helped. (I had it in the back of my mind that a low-mileage vehicle would probably have some maintenance quirks and budgeted for that, fortunately it was the mildest of issues.)

I have just just done this Ian…..new Varta F19 Silver 85AH/800CCA…..biggest that will fit….after my experience last week….old (Jan ‘24 ! ) Exide completely dead….had to use key to open door….
On “Home/Technical>New to my SD4 with a few issues…” .my post 25/5/25 8.13am….

New battery Monday……not used since…just checked ..still 12.6v so don’t think system drain.
Treehouseman did well to get things sorted…..helps with a decent code reader & finding a good mechanic.
I think the modern batteries seem to loose their capacity after a while…..instead of 77Ah you quickly end up with 27Ah…..! My FL2 : new 2012…changed Exide OE Nov 2018 for same….replaced Jan 2024 with Exide EA770….just completely failed 22/5/25……will see how Varta goes…..! FL2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto MY 2012— current
D2 TD5 HSE Man MY 1999 470kmls….gone 2014 ….lovely engine..chassis rotten
D1 300TDI Man MY 1996 56kmls….gone 1999…D2 much better
Wife’s FL1 1.8P MY 2001 32kmls …gone 2007…has Mini since.

I fitted a Varta F18 in July 2020 ( same as F19 but not as tall ) and it has been fine .Will replace next year at 6 years old as a precaution as these cars are so sensitive to weak battery. FL2 SD4 XS 2013 Orkney Grey

My new to me 2013 SD4 had its original battery, I suspect, so its now in reserve, and replaced. Not bad to last eleven years, although we had a Polo that lasted thirteen years on the original Varta.

Wow -11 years.. I suspect the one I replaced in 2020 was the original from 2013.

A new battery costs on average about £120 so £20 per annum if you renew after 6 years.

Well worth it to avoid all the problems a weak battery can throw up.

Yes 11 years is good……especially considering my last Exide battery didn’t last much more than 13 months
Will speak to supplier to see if I can claim some warranty……

Thé 11 years battery life only beaten by wife’s Mini……..new 2007….replaced battery 2022 ..15 yrs..….OE was Varta & I found that only one battery was used on the Minis at that time…..whether Stop/Start or normal…à big heavy battery as big as the one on FL2………15 yrs life…….I fitted a cheap small Lion battery since car is rarely used & I disconnect battery……lasted 3 yrs so far……..not bad…..

Annoying with the FL2 ……battery problems…but I always have a powerful booster pack & à battery tester in the car……so never been stranded…..! FL2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto MY 2012— current
