Before I throw my old Freelander diesel turbo in the scrap, I thought I would strip it down and share the carnage.
The reason it was changed was it was sticking and I could not clear the variable geometry wheel.
The exhaust side of the turbo was so rusty inside that I had to partially destroy it to open it up.
From the photos you will see the build up of carbon and rust behind the the geometry wheel.
Enjoy

Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

This website weird things to pics all the time.

Interesting how gummed up the variable vane system must have been. The turbo vanes look OK; to me at least .

I think giving the car some welly and getting the turbo really hot must help get rid of some of the carbon build up. Im a believer in the Italian Tune-Up. Jules

Thank you Gasman for sharing these interesting pictures.

By the way, I think that Jules is very right in saying that the FL2 appreciates a bit of exercise now and again.

When I had the suspected Turbo Vane sticking, it seemed to occur at a roundabout, when a bit of acceleration was needed, after a long (40mile) period of cruising just over 60mph on a quiet dual carriageway.
plus we all know that the DPF requires a burnout at times. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Drive it like you stole it after adding some 2 stroke oil to raise the cetane level and burn off all those carbon deposits!!

I always used a bit of two stroke oil as this was posted years ago.
Unfortunately I did drive like 'Miss Daisy' as I lost my need for speed years ago when I gave up my Norton Commando Crying or Very sad
Thing is, the Freelander was a nice cruiser.
Well you know what they say "never too old to learn" . What they don't tell you is that the learning process is expensive.

On the plus side, I have learned to carry out a lot of mechanical work on car's since owning the Freelander.

Just wanted to share the issue before the the turbo is scrapped.
If anyone wants any more photos let me know. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

Freelander now gone.
