Fire

My freelander2 caught fire while driving, now a write off. Is it worth while contacting land rover UK to report this?

A few more details might help people to make a decision. Mileage and age for example.

I hope everyone was ok?!

1) JLR will not be interested, Im sure. But give them a ring if you want.

2) We, as owners of old, obsolete (says JLR) Landrovers would very much like to know why it caught fire. Jules

Wow, not something I remember reading about Freelander 2s. If this was aa Vauxhall Zafira forum it would have its own topic.
Hope everyone OK and the insurance settlement helps you get mobile again soon. What's the replacement going to be? Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

"Fire, exclamation mark. Help me, exclamation mark. 123 Carrendon Road. Looking forward to hearing from you."

When the o-rings went on my fuel return line, i was pretty terrified when i saw how much diesel was sat there smoking away ontop of the engine casing. Probably not the cause for Doccy, but good reminder we're driving around large containers of very flammable liquid. Also keen to know the results from the autopsy.

I had a fire start in my Peugeot 504, but it was an old car. Wires had been rubbing. I had a BCF fire extinguisher. It saved the car. Cheap insurance!

I have a 1kg ABE on each side of the Freelander. I would prefer them in the front but there is no room.

I bash them together every few months as the powder settles into a block & is useless. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

If you decide to carry a fire extinguisher then the AFFF is the way to go, it's a clean foam so blankets and water based so has a cooling effect, dry powder has no cooling effect and is a pain to clean afterwards. AFFF really has no downsides but BCF was good pity it was banned due to it being somewhat toxic in enclosed spaces, for a car it was great. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

AFFF. Only one minor problem. Size.

Even a 2kg extinguisher in the car is too much in the way. I bought one, but it's just too large. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I suppose it's what your definition of large is as 2kg is only about the size of a 2 litre fizzy drink bottle, but a 1kg extinguisher is far more effective than a 2kg dry powder, the initial knock down is about the same but the cooling is considerable against non with dry powder. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

The 2kg I was taking about was also ABE. The AFFF are larger still.

It's hard enough to bury a compressor or 26AH auxiliary battery in the car.

Not to forget PFAS in foam extinguisher contents. One class action has been settled in Australia & there are plenty more in the pipeline. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

BCF extguishers were great, I even got to use one with our NSW Fire Brigade in a very basic work place training exercise decades ago.

Of all the staff at the time, not one of us could put the fire out. But once showed by the Fire Brigade, all of us got it right.

BCF biggest problem was they were affecting the ozone layer, together with air conditioning/fridge gases. Even all these years after they were banned the ozone hole has only shrunk mildly on average. It varies in size from year to year. Also a bigger problem in the southern hemisphere.

Air conditioners & fridges today use a flammable gas. On our Daikin air conditioner there is a warning sign for the gas flammability. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Dartman, hopefully you might be able to clarify this, but I've just done some Google'ing and there seems to be lots of results that come back with the following and it seems like an AFFF extinguisher might be hard to get ahold of in the UK.

"Fire safety continues to be a top priority in 2025, with regulations continuing to evolve. One of the major upcoming changes is the UK ban on aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) fire extinguishers. By 4 July 2025, the use of AFFF extinguishers will be completely prohibited due to environmental and health concerns." https://www.youtube.com/@scottandalana4x4

They are available Lidl had one as a special buy a few years ago, but I've been out of the UK for 3 years ScrewFix do a few from 1L to 60L from £27 but cheaper on Amazon for the same make Firechief other makes on the net from £15 but may incur delivery charges.
Amazing that any thing efficient suddenly gets banned due to environment issues, ( note they are banning diesel and petrol) more people are affected by burns trying to use a dry powder extinguisher that's either gone solid or has a blocked nozzle due to damp. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
