My EGR is goosed and the Indie was keen to let me do it myself after the conformation of what we suspected. I feel sorry for his younger mechanic doing it next week after reading your description as my days of crawling down the back of an engine are at an end.

hi bob, to be honest part of why i did this myself was because i thought, what if the egr is good and its something else. then i would have spent 300+ on labour and i still cant tow with the car.

You definitely have to remove the bulkhead or you won't get the egr/cooler out. You do not need to remove the manifold heat shield as the Haynes manual says , (and can't anyway as one of the bolts is below the cooler) . You don't really need to drain the coolant either as you only loose a small amount which can be topped up later .

I just did mine at the weekend with the help of Jules' how to. Use a mirror and you'll see the two alan bolts nicely tucked away - they don't need to come right out as the flange is a half circle on each one so will lift up and off but you will have to remove the upper stud for clearance. I chose to remove the bolt (one was missing!) rather than faffing with the stud, just super glue the bolts to the alan bit on your 1/4" extension when refitting. |

I finally managed to get mine off yesterday. I’m now cracking on with removing the cylinder head. I can only work on the engine now and then as I’m working most days. |

The timing belt jumped some teeth, so I bought it as a non runner. Several rockers are smashed up and lying in the camshaft cover.
