Good morning with just under quarter tank, went out this morning, I was 6 miles from home going up a slope when reduced engine performance came on, and the engine lost power than cut out.
Would not restart.
Got recovered to local garage, and put in 20 euros of fuel to get up to half a tank.
#Still not starting. do not have hand primer, but could buy one, if anyone can recommend one that works, if its air in the system?
The car had a new cam belt about 10k miles ago.
no signs of issues before today
Its done 175k miles and is a 2007/8 model.
any ideas? what should I look at first

Do you have any OBD errors showing? FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

There must be 100 reasons for the engine to die on the road….

There will be OBD fault codes stored…..which will give a clue to the problem….

Since the engine is basically a HDI & quite common in France it should be recognizable to most garages.

IanMetro mentioned ‘ is it a genuine oil filter’ …..I think he meant to put ‘fuel filter’ since there have been

problems with cheap non-genuine fuel filters. Purflux make them for LandRover so shouldn’t be a problem

to a French garage. As Ian wrote it could be fuel gauge wiring fault. Bonne chance

The fact that you had less than a quarter tank of fuel could be an indication that the electric transfer pump in the fuel tank has failed, & is not allowing that fuel to be used.
This pump ONLY transfers fuel from one side of the tank to the other (where the pickup point is located), it does NOT pump fuel to the engine.
The system has to be bled manually, so you or your mechanic will need to do that first, having added your 20 litres of fuel.

There is plenty of info on the forum re bleeding the system & all the other issues that I’ve mentioned. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Badger51 could well be right……car has run out of fuel because transfer pump is Caput….one side of the fuel tank is empty…..

Imperative to check for faults with code reader…..if code P0087 is shown…..low fuel pressure in c/rail
could well indicate this problem…….

Bref: without a code reader you are just guessing…..

my son came round and using some software he got from somewhere?? for free
Found out that the cam shaft position sensor was open circuit whilst turning the engine over.
Good news you would think change sensor and off we go.
BUT NO!!
took engine cover off, and found the top of the timing belt casing looser than expected. then looked at the timing belt. It is slack.
So then turned engine over to find belt and timing gears not moving. So either belt has snapped or become loose due to tensioner issues.
I had the timimg belt water pump pullys and tensioner changed in feb 24 and have since done about 25000 miles. I brought a kit off ebay and gave it to a local garage to fit.
Either kit was very poor quaulity, or something went wrong fitting it?
So now looking for a how to remove the cylinder head, to see what damage has occured.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please

There’s bound to be broken cam rockers & bent valves……
Lots of vidéos on YouTube……on how to dismantle……..& posts on this site, Nodge68 I remember did some.
I haven’t done the job but looks à lot of work…..

You may want to dump it for a Duster……!
