Evening all,
Not often I post here as not much goes wrong with the car, now on 169k miles.

But! Coming back from Ireland to Sussex last year one of the front callipers seized and the brakes and wheel were red hot. Stopped at services and cooled down the wheel and hub with water. I got home but the hub was distorted and even with new callipers, disks and pads there was a wobble when braking hard.

So! I’ve just fitted a new hub complete following the guide on here ( somewhere). Took 3 hours. But the driveshaft end bolt sheared off, so I need a replacement nsf shaft. Will that slot in at the engine end? When I took it out to try and drill the bolt out (unsuccessful) the inboard end came apart and it’s not clear whether the casing comes out or is part of the gearbox?

The replacement shafts I’ve seen https://www.dls-uk.co.uk/default/freelande...er-2.html. Show some sort of splined shaft at the inboard end.

Short answer is: it pulls out.



There is an external circlip near the end of the gearbox end spline (on left of photo) that provides a mild locking action when the shaft is pushed fully home. This locking action has to be overcome to enable the shaft to start being withdrawn. This may require a yank (ie pull with a jerk) or pry (ie use of a lever).

There are videos on youtube, one shows it being removed with a slide hammer. I have used a wrecking bar (crow bar) as shown in attached photo to ease it out.

Perfect -thanks. Surprisingly the half shafts are quite reasonably priced too -£65 or so. Will update when I do the job in the week.

All done - an hour from jack in to out. Halfshaft from eBay shop of J &R cv joints etc (no connection etc) at £65 and jobs a good ‘un.

Lost a couple of tablespoons of gearbox oil but nothing to worry about I’m sure.

Nothing not to like about freelanders is there?
