England 2012 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Santorini Black

Back in the good old days when multigrade oils were the latest thing I used to work for a filling station group where we sold all the well know brands. We also sold our own branded oil which was made by one of the high end brands and actually came out of the same tank and was put into our cans. There was a popular saying then "cheapest petrol, most expensive oil". I was quite happy as I made as much on all the high brands, about a 10% return on expenditutre, but our own brand which retailed at a lower price gave about a 50% return.

Sorry this doesn't help with choice of oil but I use Shell in mine.

J

I use Castrol Ede Ti in my i6 SE 2007, and I also use the equivalent one in my Corrado G60 and my Lotus Esprit. I spoke to Castrol UK technical department for hours on the matter, also about the content of various substances etc, and what was the differences between the old Castrol RS up till' todays newest version of Supercar oil. It's film strength is more than double of the second best oil, Mobil 1, and a really extremely good oil. Btw. They recommend that you change the oil every 10.000 km or once per year, what ever comes first. NEVER EVER long life oil. I've seen enough expensive audis inside to see what sludge that creates. NEVER!

Castrol also said that your should not change the oil to be completely fresh right before putting the car away if one does so, because the additives can be a bit tough in the beginning. So a few good long drives after the oil change, then put the car away.

And Castrol also said that their oil must be kept frost free at storage, and is generally speaking a bit degraded by hard frost.

Oh, we're at the Freelander 2 forum, so I guess the cars run day and night, all year round Thumbs Up

Kind regards,
Redfox.

IMO any oil that meets the required spec will be fine. Its not regularly changing the oil and oil filter that ruins engines. For me its been 6K miles.

FWIW I have used Smith & Allan Momentum C1 for years.

I have used castrol c1 for last 3 changes and have since brought 20 litre drum for £109 which will last for 3 years. This makes oil costs just over £36 per change which im happy with.
But since last year i change my oil/filter every 8k (i do about 10k per year).

You may consider any of the following ones. They all should provide excellent protection and performance for your FL2's engine.

1. Castrol EDGE Extended Performance Full Synthetic Motor Oil
2. Mobil 1 Extended Performance Full Synthetic Motor Oil
3. Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic Motor Oil

Just bought some oil for my Disco Sport petrol version which specifies 0W20 Castrol Edge C5
After a lot of shopping around found a good deal including free next day delivery from https://www.mymotorworld.com/car-parts/ser...ngine-oils
where you get an extra discount for registering with them. 5 litre cans were cheaper than 4 litre ones from anywhere else. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE

It's still the same old price off the S+A website but you need to pay £6.95 postage

well, you cant get just 6L AFAIK

So I buy 2x 5L (currently at £28/5L delivered), then buy just 5L at a time. I dont do enough miles to justify 20L at at time. Jules

It's always as far back as I can remember with all engine oils that if you buy one twenty litre pack its around the same price as three five litre packs, regardless of the make.

Of course nowadays with internet purchasing you have to take into consideration the carriage costs and reliability of the carrier, unless you can pick it up locally

Sods law that after using only a bit of the 20L you change the vehicle for whatever reason and the replacement uses a different spec oil. Jules
