Increasing size of SUVs - good for who ??

Probably not good for anybody except the manufacturers and the media people.

There's a chap in our village with a huge yank tank - personally I wouldn't want to drive it down our lanes.

"The macro-level effects are deadly. In the US, deaths in car crashes rose by 33% between 2011 and 2021, while pedestrian deaths have risen by 77% since 2010."

The problem is not the manufacturer or the demand, but the safety rules and laws that need to be adhered to, the new FFRR is larger than its 1970 model but the room inside is the same, thicker doors for side impact, front and rear impact zones also add to size. the average super mini is now larger larger than a MK2 Cortina but the inside room has hardly changed, and the BMW Mini is also about the same size as the MK2 Cortina but has the same interior capacity and noise. Ford dropped the Granada as it was too large and no one wanted it, but the latest Mondeo is much larger, all down to crash ability and survivability. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Why do you have a Freelander then?

But, seriously, I do think the increasing size of vehicles in recent years is a problem.
Probably driven by the American market where big cars have been favoured for a long time - they have the space and build their cities around cars. Jules

It looks as if the Mini will fit in your boot, which would be handy in emergency.

When looking for a replacement for the FL2 I notice that most newer SUVs are longer, although not as wide as the FL2. I blame it on inflation.

PS Is that your garage - I am stuck with envy. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

It is. We were fortunate to be able to do a self build 4 years ago on a large rural site. Decided to build a garage I'd always dreamed of. It's 12 x 8 m, galvanised steel framed and steel clad.

Cost around the same price to build as a traditional brick built double garage.

Only draw back, being non insulated it's cold in winter and warm in summer but it beats working on a driveway in winter.

In time I'd like to get a 2 post or scissor lift in it. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Volvo XC60 is 188mm longer than the FL2.
A big factor in the FL2's width is its large mirrors.

I agree, but I guess that the manufacturers will keep building them if that is what their customers want until government steps in and regulates

I enjoyed the reference to Krispy Kreme. Another of life's irritations for me. That and "Dunkin Doughnuts" Mad . As far as I am concerned, the world does not need them, but what do I know. People keep buying them Laughing

I spotted a Mini Countryman parked up the other day and did a double take. It is virtually a limousine!!

When we bought the Freelander in 2014, I measured all the other similar sized cars. Subaru, Mazda etc only the Tiguan was shorter, & that was only 70mm. I was surprised how long all the cars were. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
