Worth checking the live data on the obd reader for rpm during cranking.

Update from today’s tinkering! Crank sensor loom checked as far back to fuse box, all ok. However to investigate loom I removed timing belt cover, although at first glance timing belt appears all good, the plastic roller element of the tensioner is no more, a few bits fell out the bottom! So question is, is this enough ‘out of time’ to stop the engine and prevent a starting, and most important not damaged the engine internals? It certainly turns over with nasty noises? Cheers Voyager man

Shouldn’t that be part of a timing belt change? In that if it has fallen apart it brings into question whether the timing belt has been changed at the recommended intervals?

I changed the timing belt 18 months ago, inc all pulleys, tensioner and water pump! Dayco parts used. Cheers Voyager man

The black plastic piece is all that left of the tensioner pulley, the belt is now run on the metal inner of the tensioner, the tensioner has slipped around Cheers Voyager man

Yes there have been a few reports on other fora of the Dayco tensioners breaking up.

So I bought a complete Gates kit in advance of my doing the work, surprise surprise in the sealed Gates box on opening it contained a Dayco branded tensioner.

I ordered an INA one as a replacement for when the day dawns.

I would obviously be interested in knowing the make of the tensioner. Perhaps when I bought my kit Gates had a problem sourcing their tensioners you may be lucky. Or you could call the people you bought the kit from to ask before they post it

If the belt has slipped, then it's likely there is valve damage.

I've heard rumours of some fake Dayco and Gates belt kits about, but I think it's difficult to identify them. I use the Gates kit because it comes with the important crank pulley bolt. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.
