I paid £78k for my Defender in October 2022. It’s done 19,000 miles and has just been valued at £42k by WBAC. ... Also my insurance has gone from £1300 to £2600. You’ve gotta really love Land Rovers to have one! " Jules

***Range Rovers were among the most-stolen cars in the UK last
year because of their high resale value and keyless
technology that criminals exploit.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) chief executive Adrian Mardell said:
“The theft record was much worse in 2022 than it is today.
“Engineers have been working on a significant number of
interventions to counteract, avoid and get ahead of the ways
that vehicles can actually be taken.”
Thieves have been able to buy car hacking technology online
that allowed them to fool cars into unlocking and starting
without needing a key. ****

Does that mean then that our ‘click and dock key’ cars are safe from wireless theft and don’t need to worry about faraday cages?

I have had a security update for the LR Remote app that I have with my MY20 DS but no indication yet from LR about any software update for the car.

Incidentally my son finally takes delivery tomorrow of a brand new Porsche 911 and he has been sorting out the insurance. He ordered it in June last year. Surprisingly it makes no difference whether a tracker is fitted or not or even if it's stored in a garage or driveway. (actually I have to go and collect it as he is away in Africa - the things we do for our kids eh Smile ) 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Correct. The keyless fobs send a signal to the car all the time. It is this signal that the thieves use to relay over to the car (newer ones have a motion sensor which stops sending after a stationary period).
Our FL2 non-keyless systems only send a signal when you press the button.

However somebody could interrupt/capture your signal if they were close by when you press the button. But IIRC (I may be wrong) they use a rolling code when frustrates that attempt at capturing the signal.

We only put the Fiesta key in a faraday pouch. Jules

No matter what software update Land Rover do, the Insurance Company’s will not reduce their premiums 🤬

According an industrial insurance actuary friend of mine, the motor insurers have been making very little profit on car insurance for a good few years, such has been the competition in the market keeping premiums low. The big premium increases we are now seeing have largely come about as a result of a perfect storm of rising car theft, rising car prices (above inflation), increased car complexity, increasing cost of repairs and increased delays in acquiring spare parts (how much does a hire car cost for 4 months?). Jules

A few years ago about 10 years in fact my insurance costs with NFU increased, I called them and was told that for every £100 they make from car insurance they have to pay out something like £115 so they had to increase the premiums.

So I want back to A Plan for a few years, at that time they would always negotiate a cheaper deal, since A Plan have now been taken over by Howdens things have changed to a take it or leave it policy. After about four or five years with A Plan I moved back to NFU. This year they put the price up by a a quarter with no negotiation, so I used Go Compare and am now with Churchill ( with a smaller excess also had a good experience of them in the past).

It pays to shop around, but be sure to ask about the excess.

I always try to decline the courtesy car option as we have other cars in the household but it doesn't seem to make much difference and some insurers won't remove it.

On another tack how many of us have been to get some bodywork done on a car and the first question they ask is "are you paying yourself or is this an insurance job?". This sort of practice can't be helping. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I would think that asking if your paying would move you up the list. They can offer you pattern or used parts to reduce the bill. They might ask for a deposit on the material to be brought and are not going to give you umpteen days free credit and wait to be paid. So I would think a private customer could be better for them.

In my 11 years of FL2 ownership my 2 Freelanders have been very reliable.

In fact it's why I haven't moved on, well that and it's excellent driving position and comfort.
