Which Oil ?

It seems to be a controversial subject but which make/type of oil do people recommend for 'topping up' ?

Topping up?
Never had to top up, I have the scedule service and an oil change inbetween on 35k now-oil change in a couple of K.

My pal who has a 320d 57 reg since new has done 23k and is for ever topping up, he drives like a girl never takes it over 4000 rpm and nurses it in to gear. he run it in to 3k never going over 3000 rpm, where as with mine I never ran it in, drive it hard-frequently hiting the rev limiter-but always let the car warm up for a couple of minutes before setting off.

At another pals works both bosses had 530d's one drives like a saint and one had his chipped and thrashed it, guess which one needed regular top ups and blew the engine at 70k @ 2 years old?

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Stornoway Grey

Over a period of 60k miles I've used a full two litres of oil for top ups. It was Tescos best 'for diesel engines' so I got the Clubcard points ...

OK, if I knew I was going to keep the vehicle 'forever' I might have chosen something else ... Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor Smile ... but not any more ... Big Cry ... psst look at my gallery!
Company cars ... a thing of the past - May 2013.

The trouble is that the handbook quotes 'WSH-M1C321-B' SAE J639 and the sticker under the bonnet quotes standard 'WSS-M2C913-B' both are 5W - 30.
