2012 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Santorini Black
Wheel nut type

Following my rear brake issue, I struggled to get the wheel nuts off, almost to the point of snapping the studs. The 21mm socket was hard to fit which I understand is due to corrosion internally so I am planning on replacing them but I’m not sure if the correct nuts are fitted. The locking nut is a Macguard and the tapered bit spins which I seem to remember from the previous car as being normal. The other three are fixed tapers on the nuts but I seem to think the original nuts on the other car had tapers which were loose and could seize up or am I confusing it with the locking version. Maybe they were just too tightly fitted.?

Bit of a can of worms.

Many different types of wheel nut (aka lug nut in USA).

The seat in the wheel must match that of the taper on the nut - they are not all the same.

Nuts for steel wheels are often different to those for aluminium alloys.

I think now looking at them again, they may be correct type but have rusted internally and so the taper no longer spins. The socket is a very tight fit on a couple of them so clearly there is an issue. I will order a set of genuine ones then I know I’ve got the right thing.

Yes I found the 21mm socket has got tight - I found another that is slightly larger that suffices - IIRC its a Whitworth from my large collection of sockets that Im very unlikely to ever use again. Jules

You can actually buy a combination 21mm and 21.5mm socket, specifically for this issue with swelling nuts.

The only vehicles I know that use ball seat are Hondas - maybe other Jap makers do also?

LR are definitely taper, there are different specs of taper but that a whole different can of worms! (standard tapers will be fine - you're not likely to ever see anything else Thumbs Up ) 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 Manual Dynamic
