gearbox question

When I'm out and about when its changing up a gear(mostly 4th/5th and 6th) it seems to change but its not fully engaged for a number of seconds unless I ease of the throttle to let it engage properly then accelerate to get up to speed.
Have changed the fluid last weekend (changed fluid 3 times) and it seemed to fixed it a bit but its coming back as it was before.
Oil wasnt black black but was a pretty dark redish colour.
Beast only has 79000k's on it so I dont think its the g/box.
Havent changed the ptu fluid over yet.
Its similar to the early RR TD6 with the transfer case not taking up immediately.

Any suggestions as to what might be my problem or is this normal for FL2.

cheers

I assume you have an automatic gearbox.
My understanding is that automatics (being fundamentally different to manual gearboxes) have all their forward gears permanently engaged and use a braking system within the box to control which gear rotates, thus altering the ratios.
If the braking bands are worn or the oil ways are clogged then the gears may not stop moving as designed and the gearbox appears to not take up the drive quickly. Automatic gearboxes normally adjust for the wear on the braking bands - up to a point.

The automatic gearbox and the torque convertor are the only places where driveline slip, in the manner you describe, could occur. I cant see how the PTU would cause this problem; there is no clutch of any sort in the PTU only permanently engaged gears.

So my view is that yes it could well be your gearbox especially if its done 50K miles on its original ATF.
Has it been used for a lot of towing, do you know?

My autobox starting becoming clunky at 40K miles and required a good flush to ATF (12L) to return it to a smooth gear change.

Maybe yours just needs more flushing with ATF. Jules

Hi Jules,
No towing as it doesnt have a towbar. I will be fitting one in the next week or so.
Was thinking that the first owner and then my nephew only did suburban miles in it, so it might not have gotten up to hwy speeds all that often, where as I do hwy runs whenever I'm out and about as I live semi rural.
Once its in gear properly,it will hold that gear. Downshifting not noticeable. No problem tootling around town up to 60-65kph.
Might give it another flush with 12lts of fluid again when I do the next service and see how it goes then.

yeah run it for a while and try another fluid flush.

Also make sure the engine mounts are good shape, worn mounts can cause rough shifting.

Full flush rather that several smaller flushes would be better
