Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone knows if it’s still possible to view build specifications on Topix for specific vehicles? I can’t seems to find it anymore…

Scotland 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Manual Zermatt Silver

Found this old thread on the site's search facility and was wondering the same thing.

Back in Nov 2017 I was able to get the the build spec for my current FL2 but I am trading it in for an old D3 and went to have a look at the build spec on TOPIx only to find that there is really no useful info on there at all.

Is it a paywall thing? 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

I stuck my VIN into the code finder.
My goodness, what a lot of stuff I have on my Freelander.
Took ages to read it all.
Wee bit of help. I am supposed to have a first aid pack and a warning triangle.
Handbook shows where the triangle should be but isn't.
Can some one tell me where the first aid kit hides please.
I do carry a kit in my bag in the boot anyway.
What a piece of car i have, according to the list of fitted bits.

Jim, I'm afraid I can't answer for the First Aid kit, but the FL2 doesn't seem to have any secret cubbies, so if you've not found the kit already, then it probably is long gone! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

From memory, I think there was a velcro strap fitted to the l/h side of the luggage compartment to attach it with. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Same kind of thing here. Tried to get me to sign up for carvertical, which would be great if I was constantly buying cars, but I don’t.
The power of the VIN number is not complete.
Land Rover themselves can’t get my current car specifications correct with items supposedly built in that just aren’t there!

Slightly off topic. I went from a D3 to a Freelander 2. There's no way I'd go back to a D3 unless I needed to tow 3 Tons, or needed 7 seats, if the latter I'd get a Volvo XC90.
The D3 is a lovely vehicle, but is so hideously complicated and unreliable, that I very quickly fell out of love with it. I dreaded every drive, simply because I never knew if I was going to be returning home on a low loader.

The Freel 2 on other hand I don't have that worry. I get in it and just enjoy driving it. The better fuel consumption, lower RFL, lower maintenance costs and cheaper insurance all add to the enjoyment over the D3.

Just my opinion of course, but be warned a D3 will empty your wallet fast if it all goes wrong. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.

In 7 years and 120k miles, my D3 only broke down once, needing an alternator

5 years in with the Freelander, and so far, so good, other than a burst turbo hose

My D3 was a 1 owner (he was an LR dealer sales manager) full dealer history, perfect MOT history and so on. However in 3 years and 30 k miles I replaced all the wishbones, EAS compressor, all 3 valves blocks, all the brake lines, all the wheel bearings, rebuild the front diff, replaced both rear drive shaft, the propshaft, 6 injectors, all the boost hoses, and a turbo actuator and an EPB module. I sold it when the timing chains started rattling on starting, and replaced it with a much more reliable and cheaper to maintain Freelander 2. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.

Thanks, yes I suspect that the D3 could easily be a money pit.

I must admit that I have a strong feeling that moving from an old FL2 to an even older D3 is not a wise move and if anyone else had sugggested this, I would have said they were daft. The FL2 drove perfectly all the way down the 532 miles south to where the D3 was, seemed a real shame to part with it.

But it was going to fail its MOT in November without a bit of work. It needs new rear brake back-plates, which means re-doing both rear wheel bearings. It needed welding on one side for its MOT last year and the other side probably isn't much better. There was a suggestion of an odd noise from the front as well, possibly a wheel bearing beginning to go or perhaps something worse. And I was getting a turbo whistle at low revs. So all-in-all, I was getting nervous. I had hoped it might have reached the 200,000 before I sold it, but was still 500 miles short of that.

The replacement D3 has height-level issues, but all the air components seem fine. Hopefully replacing the rear level sensors will cure the fault. I've always found the boot-space in the FL2 slightly tight, so wanted something a bit bigger. I've also had a couple of occasions recently where a 7-seat option would have been handy. I actually was looking for an XC90, but a couple of the reviews suggest that the Volvo lacked any character and that the reviewers preferred driving the Disco.

Despite being an '05 D3, for the first time ever, I have had no fault codes showing at all on the GAP IID Tool - the FL2 always came up with a few random faults that needed clearing, as well as the couple of permanent ones that I was living with. With winter approaching, I am looking forward to the diesel heater, heated screen, heated screen-wash and heated seats, which all seem to be working!

Time will tell just how stupid a move this was - running costs are certainly going to be higher - and I do miss the FL2 Big Cry 2005 D3 2.7 Auto
