Hi both thanks for the replies.

JonMs really appreciate you checking so thoroughly once again. Really good to cross check these values and gives confidence on the sensor.

AJ918 - I've owned the car for about 18mths. Issue became apparent probably a year ago but it took a while to realise and narrow it down. Before this my dad had it for about 2 years and he says he never had an issue with It!

Current mileage is around 71,000

History is patchy to be honest. Its been serviced by various independents for the last 5 years.

Couldn't say on the oil type used. I can ask my current place to check what they've used and switch if needed. One of the only cars I've owned I haven't serviced myself...

No remap I'm aware of, egr not blanked

Use is mainly fast rural a roads. Daily commute/journey was typically 20-30 minutes each way or 15 miles I'd say for the last couple of years with the odd long motorway drive thrown in. Now it makes no difference, dpf fills up within 20 miles regardless of Use. It hasn't as far as I know been used for urban commutes though. But nor has it done a lot of motorway miles in this time.

No towbar fitted.

I'm tempted to get the dpf off and cleaned out in case it's clogged with Ash. Given how well it drives and pulls I'm not sure if it could be running dirty unless I'm missing something.....

Has anyone had any experience of removing the DPF altogether?
I have heard that it can be removed and does not affect the MOT.

Tests for diesel cars and lorries were tightened up to ensure vehicles have a critical exhaust filter if one had originally been fitted as standard, Roads Minister has announced.

Garages and testing stations are required check for a diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the inspection of the exhaust system as part of the MOT test (or annual test for heavy vehicles) from February 2014.

The vehicle will automatically fail the MOT test if the filter had been fitted as standard but is found to be no longer present.

The filter works by trapping solid particulate matter from exhaust gases. This type of filter has been in use for more than 20 years and helps meet European emission standards, improving air quality and health standards.

Some firms offer services to remove the filter, claiming it will improve the economy. But it is an offence to drive a vehicle that has been modified this way, as it will no longer meet the emissions standards the car achieved when it was approved for sale in the UK.

Hi having read the above I would ask the following basic questions in order to try and understand the basic issue.

* Have you owned the vehicle from new if not how long
* Current mileage
* Full service history with LR dealer or Independent garage
* Type of engine oil used (should be C1 5w-30 spec such as Castrol Edge Professional, and must meet Ford WSS-M2C934-B, ACEA C1 and latest spec ST JLR 03.5005) these are low ash engine oils that are required for the Freelander 2 not a generic one that most non franchised garages might use.
* Has the engine been remapped or the EGR blanked etc;
* How is the vehicle driven, Motorway, Rural, Urban and average journey time and number of miles covered.
* Average road speed/engine RPM
* Do you use the vehicle for towing.

I have just reread this thread and saw the need for 'LOW ASH' engine oil.

I did not realise this and I do wonder how much trouble has been caused using substitute generic oil. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 76k+ miles) (MY2015)

Lots of info over on the Jaguar Forum regarding low ash oil and DPF's.......seems it's a "must"! Just started researching it myself as have just purchased a Jag with a DPF, a first for me.

Depends want you mean by "substitute generic oil"

If an oil meets the spec required for FL2s with DPFs then its OK (Ford 2C934-B SAE 5W-30 C1).

Obviously using the wrong specification oil is not OK.

Ive used Smith & Allan oils for years. Jules
