Luck of the draw.

Just had the biggest bill in my 60 years of motoring. Just under £1350 for a new ERG, Cooler, service and MOT.
If I wasn't Lucy enough to have my Son in Laws garage to do the work I would have to look at getting a smaller car.
Just too give you a sense of proportion my Son who's a Mercedes Technician tell's me his dealership charge's £222 an hour for labour.
I have had a Freelander for over 8 years now this being my 2nd with 98000 miles on it so combining the total mileage at around 120000 miles it could be a lot worse.
I love my Freelander and there is nothing I can replace it with and when I talk to Pam who says has no interest in cars will not engage in an alternative.
Anyone found a good alternative to a Freelander, please let me know.

It may be an expensive bill but one needs to amortise. So probably similar to most cars over X years of ownership.

Still far better off than forking out for a new car. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

"£222 an hour for labour."

Wow - but I suppose fancy coffee machines and leather sofas cost a bit to run.

But a good proportion of that bill was for just the EGR valve and EGR cooler - they're not cheap, I replaced just the EGR valve earlier this year - it was £153.

And I bet the MOT fee was top dollar too.

(My local garage have just put the MOT up to £40) Jules

If this sorts out your car then its a pain but i wouldn't personally consider moving the car on which may cost you more, especially when you consider what is an alternative to the FL2.
Keep it and enjoy it.
I recently had my EGR valve replaced and it was similar cost but the main cost is the labour due to where it is and work to remove/replace it.
For gods sake don't buy a battery on wheels Shocked

OK , I kept my late wife’s Freelander for 12 months after her passing . I’d used it on and off for all of our ownership alongside my various German company cars . From 2016 when I retired to 2021 when I sold the FL2 , I ran it along side a 2016 , Subaru Outback , 2.0 SE premium diesel . I still have the Subaru . It is a superb vehicle . 80,000 miles only needed service , pads , discs , tyres . No warranty work . 1 turbo shield clip needed replacement last year , dealer did it FOC .

Same ground clearance as a FL2. But lacks the commanding driving position . Best gearbox Auto I’ve driven it’s the Lineartronic CVT with flappy paddles . . Like a magic carpet . Averages 38-40 with 48 on a run . Full time AWD fantastic road car . Less capable off road ( real off road ie plough ) than FL2 , but I’ve used it on forest tracks and fields at shoots . More passenger space and lots more boot space , all leather electric everything , more tech and drivers aids . They stopped making the diesel in 2018 . The most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned . The dealers are great. So in summary it’s a great real world do everything , is euro 6 , doesn’t need adblue , well worth a look .

As I said I’ve run both so it’s genuine info , not what someone has read on a forum and regurgitated . I’ll be sad to see the Scooby go , but it will be traded next year. 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

2016 Subaru Outback SE 2.0 diesel SE Premium Lineartronic Sold 2024 after 8 years and 80k miles . Best Car I ever owned !

2023 Toyota Hilux invincible X 2.8 Auto .

Please give us a clue and tell us what it is that you love about the FL2 that is important to you in a replacement.

As for me, I am on my 2nd FL2 and now over 11 years of FL2 driving, and am having trouble replacing the lovely high driving position and generous windows. I keep looking at modernish RRS but they are very expensive, although to be honest everything seems expensive these days. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Same as you Ian, love the high driving position, even added 50mm tubes to lift the drivers seat which has also made it more comfortable. I didn't have the same experience in the RRSport as you sit a lot lower and the evoke was awful and couldn't wait to get out of it. I hear they are talking about a new Mini Defender now if they can get that right that could be a winner. Will need a win on the Loto to be able to afford one though.

I have driven about 120k miles in my FL2s also. - I have just updated my Profile Details.

Although I have to admit my first FL2 (XL SD4 - with many extras) was my wife's choice as she wanted something 'Safe', and having checked that it was capable of a decent sub 10sec 0 - 60mph, I agreed to try one that was on sale locally.
I wasn't to sure that it would suit me as I had become used to zooming around the country in medium sized, two litre petrol hatchbacks and estates, but I was pleasantly surprised, and now love the new found visibility.

My previous cars are listed in this 'What did you have before a Freelander' Thread;

Good luck with getting the right ticket.
