High pressure fuel pump replacement

Been trying to sort this problem for a couple of years now. Was stoked to finally get a booking at the highest reputation LR indy in Sydney. After being stuffed around for two days I have to take matters into my own hands.

Has anyone here DIY replaced the high pressure fuel pump? I'm suspicious that it's not just the pump that gets replaced - a pipe and some washers or bits and bobs.

The mechanic can't get a pump, but I can find them on ebay easy enough. Oh, yes, they can get a LR pump - eventually coz there's no stock. And it'd be $6000 allegedly.

They will fit a pump if I source one that they are convinced is genuine.

The mechanic was also unsure if the correct pump is a Bosch, a Siemens or a VDO. I've seen nothing but Bosch advertised for the Freelander. Do you know?

And part numbers. There seem to be two Bosch numbers associated. 0986437034 and 0445 010 367. Both parts numbers appear against the same pump listing.

The LR number is LR047217.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Frankly I seriously doubt these guys look at Freelanders. Defenders and Rangies, yes. Occasionally a Disco. But a Freelander? Censored off mate.

Cheers fellas. MY11 SD4 SE Auto

Here in the uk the part number resolves to https://www.lrparts.net/lr047217-fuel-inje...10-on.html
Why don’t you ask duckworth parts, a site sponsor if they can supply one? They’ll even ship it to you quicker than you could drive across Australia!

There seems to be several numbers for high pressure fuel pumps for the diesel 2.2

LR009296 and LR047217,

LR0092296 (OEM) is about £500-600,
Freelander 2 06 on - 2.2L DW12 Diesel from VIN 7H033919 to 9H999999

whereas LR047217 is over £1000.
Freelander 2 06 on - All 2.2L DW12 Diesel engines from VIN DH753752

not sure what he difference is but it seems to depend on your VIN Jules

You're right Jules, it does depend on the VIN.

My VIN seems to throw everyone. One pump suits up to 9H9999999. One pump suits DH00000001 on.

Easy.

Except my VIN is BHxxxxxxxx

I've submitted a query to Craddock, may give Duckworth a go also, thanks BossBob.

PS Aaaaha - lrparts indicates the LR009296 suits up to 9H999999 which is up to the end of 2009.

Therefore my vehicle should have the LR047217. Flaws in that? MY11 SD4 SE Auto

The HP pump is an easy DIY replacement job. Mine has been off twice, with a third time pending. It takes about an hour to remove the pump, and another hour or so to fit a replacement. However I'd not replace it unless it's been proven faulty, and they're pretty reliable. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. My daily driver.

HAHAHAHA And of course there's a flaw in that. Craddocks reply was that LR009296 is correct for my car. Although the Evoque "SD4" uses LR047217.

Nodge68, that is good news. I think the only way to resolve the matter is to take my pump off and check for a number on it somewhere.
At least when the indy was recording the live data the ECU logged that it failed because the demanded 150k pressure wasn't met - my pump only provided 65k of whatever pressure unit was being used. So the conclusion was that it is indeed the pump.

Nodge68 - what consumables are required to R&R the pump? There's a gasket or two involved I believe? MY11 SD4 SE Auto

If your indy was going on what a diagnostics reader said the pressure was then be warned it might not be the fuel pump. Last time I had this (on an old van, not my freelander) it was the pressure sensor that was faulty.
As far as I am aware, the only way to be really sure is to stick a pressure gauge on the fuel rail although I don't know how easy that is on the FL2.

Depends on whether you have other symptoms that match low fuel pressure I guess. FL2 2007 2.2d Auto SE. Baltic Blue.

I'd also be cautious of a 65kPa reading, without proving that it's not the pressure sensor at fault. Unless an actual pressure gauge was used (difficult to read through a closed bonnet at speed), then the ECM will only output the signal it's getting from the rail sensor.
From memory the pump should be capable of supplying over 160kPa, but the maximum requirement for these engines is about 140kPa, so under the maximum of the pump.

Consumables are pump to head gasket, and the HP pipe, which LR say is a one time use item, although mine has been refitted at least 3 times, so I'd just go with the gasket. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. My daily driver.

I had leaned towards it genuinely being the pump. I just don’t know. I guess I could replace the sensor and see what happens.
Good news that it’s just one gasket, thanks Nodge.
