Uneven Wear On One Rear Tyre

Had an advisory after service and MOT saying uneven wear on inside of one of my rear tyres.
Would this just be a tracking issue and I need to get that done?

Many things can effect tyre wear. Incorrect pressure as suggested above is the main reason, but that should have been corrected and noted at the service, if they were doing the job to LR standards.

A mismatched tyre can have different wear characteristics to the others, so wear surprisingly differently.

A worn bush is more likely to be the cause of uneven tyre wear than wheel alignment, but again I'd expected that to be investigated at the time of the service and picked up at the MOT, and a quote issued for rectification works. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. My daily driver.

There are a number of possible causes of uneven tyre wear. The main four are:-

1. Incorrectly inflated tyres

If your tyres are over or under-inflated, this can result in uneven wear. This is because incorrect inflation can cause increased abrasion between the road and tyre tread - resulting in parts of the tyres being worn more quickly. Where a tyre is over inflated, the tyres will tend to exhibit more wear in the centre whilst under inflation usually results in more wear on the outer section of the tyre.

The tyre pressure numbers that are recommended by your manufacturer should always be followed as they are designed to give a safe and comfortable ride.

2. Worn suspension components

If a wheel leans too much to either side in normal running, it puts increased load on one side of the tyre which can result in uneven wear. This may be due to weakened springs, worn ball joints, or issues with other components of the suspension.

3. Misaligned wheels

Your wheels need to be correctly aligned as per the manufacturer's guidelines. Misaligned wheels are a common source of uneven wear and also reduce the lifespan of the tyres and reduce fuel efficiency.

I would suspect a worn bush as it is only on the inside, under-inflation would wear on both shoulders of the tyre, over -inflation would wear the centre of the tyre, also could be out of balance wheel?.
However if it were a worn bush this should have been picked up on the MOT? if it were tracking more than one tyre would be affected. 2013 FL2 XS.

I've learned to rotate the tires between front and rear on the same side every 10K miles (I know, that's not what the book says).

Doing that, they wear evenly and ride well. I do keep the pressure set (monthly, or daily on road trips), aligned and balanced. The vehicle rarely needs to be aligned, maybe once in 170K?

Has it had any suspension work recently?
I changed both rear coil springs on my wife's VW Tiguan with what I assumed were the identical replacement items only to find it wearing the inside of both rear tyres badly after a few thousand miles. Had a 4 wheel alignment done and new tyres which seems to have cured the issue. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I recommend that you add Shock Absorber and Wheel Bearing to the list.

The camber angle is negative which will load up the inside more than the outside when you are just driving around.

If the bearing or shock are not functional then the tyre could see inside wear just by driving straight down the road.

For my Volvo S80 3.2 one of the rear shocks was completely worn out and it cause strange Tyre wear.

Until I replaced it it wasn't obvious that it had gone.

When I leaned on the Air Gun to remove the nut the shock compressed far to easily.

Modern Shocks are filled with high pressure nitrogen and in this case the nitrogen had leaked out so instead of about 75 pounds of force to compress the shock it took about 7 pounds. The opposite side was fine but I always replace in pairs.
