yes you can.

the locking wheel nuts only have to match the socket that is used to remove/place them.

I have a set in my garage I don't use.

I remember when alloys weren't a common fitment on cars, chrome hub caps or plastic wheel trims were the norm on steel wheels. Those who did have alloys tried to protect against their theft by various types of locking wheel nuts. But when did you last hear of alloy wheel theft? It's just not a common issue anymore. Unless you have rare expensive or very desirable wheels fitted I don't imagine gangs are actively targeting old Freelander wheels. The locknuts are so easily defeated with readily available tools that they dont actually achieve much. Mine has locking nuts fitted only because it came with them. If it didn't I'd not lose any sleep without them. (Edit - if I go out to find mine up on blocks this morning I know who to blame 🤣) Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I had a wheel nut key went missing after a visit to a tyre garage. I rebought one, it started me thinking, always a dangerous event.

I just took them all off that was over three years ago now.

If you can't get a lock nut thief key. Just tighten up the other nuts even more. Drill a few pilot holes through a piece of aluminium, put a few pins or old drill bits through, & leaver off nut. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

many years ago I put my FL1 in for a service, only to be told later by the dealer service department "you didn't leave us the Locking Wheel Nut"

To which I replied "you diddn't check to see if the vehicle had any fitted " !!!

Yeah, as others said it's just not really an issue any more. I got rid of all mine years ago because my wife or whoever she hired to wash the cars would clean out the the glovebox and the key socket would vanish. I'm confident I could defeat a locknut at home, but not on the highway shoulder.

Following an incident with my Jaguar XK, I now replace all the locking wheel nuts on my car as a matter of course.

Thus if I need to change a wheel at the roadside it is merely a matter of undoing five wheel nuts. No more swearing about a locking wheel nut with a stripped thread or other horror that means a twenty minute job becomes a two hour wait for a tow truck. Tim

My locking wheel nuts are the only ones that haven't swollen to the extent that getting a socket on them is difficult and getting it off again is even more expletive provokingly so.

Perhaps I should just buy another 16 locking nuts Rolling with laughter

United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 Metropolis LE Auto Fuji White

It is quite a few years since I have had to leave my UNIQUE? socket for the local dealer to use. It seems that the garage, and quite a few of the mechanics have their own sets of sockets to cover the nuts used.

If keyed sockets are sold in sets of multiple 'keys' then are they of much use against an organised thief.

My only question is - are the locking wheel nut socket sets common to the make of car, or are they common across makes. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
