Glow plug problems

Reading all the different forums there are dozens of Freelander 2,s with Glowplugs problems.
Me included. This forum has lots. Too many mild winters and then hit by extremely cold temperatures.
Even with a new Yuasa HSB110 I really struggled.. New plugs from LR being fitted next week.
Once the temp rose to minus2 no problems.
Is it all just a massive coincidence. Jim A

Of course we might not get the -7C temps again any time soon to find out if the new plugs cured the problem! Smile 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

I have had several FL2’s over the last 12 years and all the early ones were difficult to start in extreme cold. I currently have a 2013 SD4 which starts first turn even at -10c. I am not sure if Land Rover changed something on the later models but cold starting doesn’t appear to be a problem. Heated steering wheel is also amazing. Not something I thought I needed or wanted but I will miss it if my next vehicle doesn’t have one.

I have a 2010 HSE. No heated steering wheel, have the heated seats.
Does anyone know if I could retrofit a heated steering wheel.?
Thanks Jim A

If you do a search on this site, you should find a thread where someone did this. I recall it sounding fairly complicated! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

It requires the clock spring with the high current tracks from the 2012 onwards Freelander 2. The problem is the steering column was changed, so the later clock spring doesn't fit the early car, which makes the conversion difficult or impossible. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. My daily driver.

I also have been lucky with starting, first time - every time.
Although it went a little funny when I tried Nodge's method of pausing then pressing brake to allow electronics to ramp up.
Admittedly it was after the car had been standing for some 48 hrs in sub zero temperatures, but it seemed to ignore any attempt to run glow plugs and did successive attempts at starting automatically before starting and running smoothly on 4th.

Also will admit to now putting heated steering wheel high on my list of necessary car options. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 74k+ miles) (MY2015)

Thought the heated steering wheel was a bit of an overkill until I finished a days fishing last week... Then Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh nice.😁 If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Heated steering wheel - what a gimmick.
Then we went to Whitby (near Toronto) mid winter. Ever grabbed a steering wheel with wet hands (clearing snow off the roof) when the car has been stood overnight well below minus 20C? Wind chill makes it a lot colder.

You can't let go for ages

Bl@@dy hire car was from Florida with nothing for cold climates.

Current car has a heated steering wheel - it's second on the list below heated windscreen and above heated seats. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Heated windscreen washer jets are good too. Jules
