New battery can't hurt period. Thumbs Up The most important thing about a battery is how long it's sat on the shelf. Two weeks is plenty IMPO so manufacture date is equally as important as getting the right/recommended battery. While you are at it, run an extra (earth) ground or two. Plenty of threads on this forum about extra earths.

Right....... another update.

The bunch of keys pulling on the key fob was a load of tosh as the fault came back.

Fitted a new battery and the fault is still there.

Now, when it does eventually fire it does a half crack, then fails to start and then the next go it will normally start.

I'm now also getting a clicking sound every couple seconds whilst it is ticking over. I'm unsure if this is related....

It's booked in for a new starter motor but I'm worried I'm just chucking parts at it.

Here's a video of the noise but you need to have volume right up to hear it.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Lee

Have a look through these links about the one way clutch in the alternator pulley.

I think that it makes a similar noise.

I know that it is nothing to do with original fault, but you may not have listened so intently before. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Dodgy starte rmotor?

Good afternoon/good evening!

My 2014 SD4, 74,000 miles, appears to have a similar issue in regards to the starter motor but would like an opinion from the collective if at all possible.

The issue started about a week ago, failing to crank, pushed the button numerous times and it goes through the sequence of checks. A click every time I push the start button which includes the glow plug warning light so I am assuming it's not the glow plugs? The battery is relatively new from around June and has been charged a few times over the weekend. So probably not the battery.

I do a lot of short journeys during the day to and from work and the odd journey afterwards for chores etc. so on reflection a lot of starting.
I'm hoping it's not the glow plugs as that would appear to be a whole lot of pain involved. I'm kinda guessing it's the starter as all of the indications would point me in that direction.

Thanks in advance.

Just to add;
The fault appeared to occur only when the car was cold until last night when I got home turned the car off then after 30 seconds tried to turn it on but fault returned. Same click but turned over after second or third try.

Have you checked the contacts in the starter motor solenoid? They are prone to wear from use. The. Symptom is intermittent starting, just getting a click after the checks on pressing the button.

Bob,

No not yet unfortunately but will add that to my first to do list. SWMBO has me painting and decorating before eldest daughter arrives home for Christmas. When I was looking through other posts I cam across someone who had turned off the DSC and believe it or not has started first time but may be a fluke Laughing So may have to do a bit more fault finding.

Will be checking the solenoid contacts first thing Monday morning, all being well. Thumbs Up

Probably a fluke. DSC is more to do with wheel sensors, ABS and gyroscopes (the solid state type).
