I am trying to get myself motivated to change my car in the next few months. I currently have a 14 plate FL2 SD4 XS with 67k miles and bought it in 2017. The issue is that I have never had a car this old before and if there was a newer FL2 available with low mileage I might buy it but this is one of the last and in my experience of having several FL2s in the family it's definitely the best of the bunch. So I am toying with a DS or possibly a Volvo XC40 (sorry) and my question is what model DS should I go for? What to avoid etc. I am guessing at petrol auto for a start and I guess I am talking £30k + ?

I had a similar dilemma but decided to keep the car for another year or two having invested in replacing timing belt, water pump etc. That being said I like the XC 40 but also the SEAT Ateca 2l petrol 4x4. A lot of car for the money.
The reported dpf problems with the DS diesel are a worry and the petrol version is very thirsty. Did not Chicken George have a 240 petrol but has now gone all electric with a Jag. No money in chickens my arse. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

I would choose Volvo XC40 (or XC60) as a serious contender for a FL2-like experience from the driving position.
There are good, if expensive, hybrid and full electric versions too.

The I-Pace is available 2nd hand and is worth driving, although I worry what the insurance is as its very powerful and quick. It has a lower driving position, but it looks and feels quality inside.

I will not be considering a change until my FL2 is nearer its 10 year/100k miles-

I can see the reasoning behind the petrol - the Diesel isn't that more economical especially around town and when you consider the price difference between the two fuels it becomes a no brainer.

The DS really does suit the auto box, so yes tick that box.

Diesels mmm we had a D180, no problems after the initial farce of Adblue software updates, but it does put fuel in the oil which can't be good for longevity. Currently our D240 has been good - needed modified balance shafts when I bought her with 6k on the clock, has eaten a water pump, but never actually let me down. Doesn't put fuel in the oil due to the different exhaust / turbo architecture, but still she has a DPF so will need a long run (time NOT distance) every now and again.

Now the important stuff - do you really really need 7 seats, because they take up the space for the spare wheel - you can get a version with 7 seats and an underslung spare, but unicorn poo is more common and the underslung spare MUST be specifed at build stage (different exhaust system etc.)

Late 2018 the CANBUS system changed and independents are struggling to run full diagnostics.

So 5 seat auto petrol , or early 2018 D240 Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Interested in this thread now as I’ll likely be forced by the Mayor to change our 63 plate as it’s pretty inevitable that ULEZ will be expanded to include my home address in August next year. I’d probably go down the petrol route as well, mindful that there’s always the possibility in years to come that he’ll attempt to outlaw diesels altogether. As well as the Volvos that have been mentioned, I’d added the Skoda Kodiaq to my shortlist.
Hopefully we’d have moved within the year, so this might never happen

Don’t get me started on that - I’ve emailed my local councillor and the Mayors Office several times asking where all the charges, fines and penalties are being spent but have never received any response beyond the usual ‘Mayor- speak’. There’s been over £112m generated so far but certainly no evidence of where it’s being spent.

We went from an Fl2 to a DS and to be completely honest I'd have the Fl2 back tomorrow, the Ds is the 2.2 so the better engine but the rest of the vehicle feels like it's been built down to a price. At the minute I'm on with trying to sort out the electric power steering motor recall as I've been told JLR will only replace the steering rack if the 3 motor bolts are corroded or any are broken. I've been told by a reputable LR specialist that we have been very lucky for it not to fail with it being an early DS and it's a case of when they fail and not if. We were hoping to keep the vehicle for 10+ years but I just don't think it'll make that. I was goingvto pay a specialist to replace the bolts but he recommended against it as they will more than likely snap . 2009 FL2 TD4 SE (Sadly gone)

Old enough to remember the farce that was power steering failure on the FL2.
loads of owners were forced to replace power steering rack & pipes & pump & reservoir at their cost until LR eventually admitted that swarf was introduced during the manufacturing process (weld spatter?).

I've spoke to JLR customer services and they are saying that they have extended the warranty on the steering rack to 10 years or 150k, not much good if the motor/rack fails at speed. If there are any bolts which have broken or seriously corroded then it's a new complete rack circa £2400 under the warranty. If we don't get it replaced under the extended warranty the cars going as I'm not will to drive it any distance with the risk of steering failure. 2009 FL2 TD4 SE (Sadly gone)

When the power steering failed on our FL2 it was at speed, bit of a shock but still had steering of sorts - actually continued to drive 20 miles it to work with a seized pump.
When the bolts securing the electric motor shear I am fairly sure that the effects will be similar, still steers but you need a lot more effort.

Worrying that it could fail at any time is something that I understand, how about a bit of pre-emptive maintenance?

These guys will strip and recondition your rack, so no need for coding and at £850 (without labour) it's got to be cheaper than the dealership.

Fairly sure that others will also offer the same service - it was the first that google suggested.

I am sorry to see that the Discovery Sport has joined the no button crowd.

I would find this hard to cope with as (due to advanced years) my eyes are becoming less able to refocus from outside (long range) to inside (short range) without changing my glasses.

I am sure that 'computer' screens with never ending menus are NOT suitable for car driving.
