Noise in cab (whirring)

Hi everyone,

First post, please be gentle. Wink Been lurking a while whilst considering buying, and now i've done it. 2009 TD4 xs. Really nice to drive, enjoying getting amongst it and learning about it.

Noticed today whilst town driving (1st and 2nd gear mainly) a whirring sound in the cab, related to engine revs and not road speed. I was hoping one or two of you experts might have an idea what it may be?

Hopefully as i pick up more experience i'll be able to pay it forward.

Thanks in anticipation of any help

Welcome to the forum,

If this whirring sound is down to the right of the steering wheel, I get this too and it is something to do with the aircon, but nothing bad (I think). I read in here that if you get your aircon regassed the sound goes away so it could be something to do with the gas pressure getting a bit low (my aircon still working fine though). It definitely gets louder when the aircon is working harder, as it will have been on these last few hot days.

Try switching off aircon and see if the sound goes away...

Hi mate, cheers for the welcome.

Drove it for a while today without the cabin fan operating, and the noise was gone. Strange as the noise increases and decreases with engine speed. Rolling Eyes

Yes it's something to do with the aircon compressor which is belt driven off the engine so it varies with engine speed. If you turn the fan off then the aircon also stops automatically.

Time to report in....

Had the aircon re-gassed today, and I'm bloody freezing. Laughing Best news? Whirring gone, so thanks for the input.

Next job is to do the fan blower lube mod.

I believe it's wiper arms off, cowl off and then i should have enough access to drill a lube hole is that correct?

Many thanks for your help.

Yes but use a sharp drill bit, the cage may be brittle. I used the ceramic silicone spray, one good spray about three years ago

I had the whine that varied with revs, though it was something on the engine or tranny but it was the cabin fan... turning the cabin air off makes it go away instantly, that's how you can tell.

I did lube the fan bearing from the top, it took a while for the lube to works it way into the bearing but after a couple months it got quiet. Next time I'll get the kind of lithium grease that comes in a small toothpaste tube, the spray cans don't work upside down. Or you could probably use a piece of fine plastic tube.
