2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Whistler White
TD4 None Starter

Hi Folks,

First time poster here but regular on D2/D3/RR forums.

I have an interesting issue with my TD4 2007 Auto. Key in the slot all the lights come on for ignition and then nothing except a hum and click from the glove box area (not starter).
If I do a hard reset, disconnect the battery for 10 mins, then put the key in the slot it starts as normal. No issues. As long as I leave the key in the slot, it can start all day long. However, if I remove the key and then put it back and try to start, nothing, just all the ignitions lights etc. I have to hard reset again.
I do not have a code reader as yet although have ordered but any ideas would gratefully be received.

Cheers, Jerry

Hi,

No, there are no messages indicating any fault. Is there something I should be looking at in this area?

Cheers.

The steering lock module is prone to failing and results in a non start it’s accompanied by clicking from the passenger side fuse box and a steering column locked message on the dash. An emulator fixes the problem

Thanks for the advice.
I feel this is probably not the issue due to no message and the fact that after a hard reset and the key left in the port, it'll behave normally. Only when the key is removed then the none crank issues arise. A code or something is being triggered to cause that which can be cleared by the hard reset.

Cheers Jerry

United Kingdom 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Rimini Red

Try the other fob, as there might be an issue with the one you're using.

A hard reset won't clear valid codes, only a suitable code reader can do that. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.

Okay and thanks again.

I am sort of leaning to the fact the key docking port may be the issue given the fact the problem is triggered by removal of the key and then in when re inserted the non-start occurs.

I have ordered the AP200MAX thingy so I am not so blind!

Cheers, Jerry

Hello Folks. I thought I'd close this off having found the issue which may help others.

On my diagnostic tool a steering lock error kept popping up as permanent so with this and the advice given I purchased an Emulator.

This did nothing unfortunately, so I was temped to dig elsewhere but consulted an independent LR specialist who confirmed with their equipment that the steering lock was at fault.

They rang a specialist in LR diagnostics who stated the ECU? can be tricked into thinking all was well with the lock using a certain setting. This was tried and it worked.

Effectively the lock is bypassed but REMAINS plugged in. I am not sure why the emulator did not work.

So I have a functioning FL2 again.

Cheers Jerry
