LR041112 - Rear Vibration Damper

Part previously mentioned in these threads

Has anyone spotted the latest little joke from LR?

These dampers were priced at around £20. Now over the last year or so FL2s are becoming more popular with people who do their own work on the cars, the spanner enthusiasts like myself. As a result people have cottoned on to the fact that these dampers serve a purpose and they break, so people have started buying them, creating demand.

So LR have just raised the price of these to around £140 Rolling with laughter

Each Shocked

Whenever JLR spot a previously slow moving part for "obsolete" vehicles is starting to experience demand, they whack the price up several hundred percent. There are no "pattern" parts aftermarket for these, it's OEM only.

This is why the last £140k I have spent on new cars since 2018 has gone to other manufacturers. JLR have been doing this for too long, so now I only run older LRs like my FL2, and save my big spend for other companies. JLR can die in a fire with this continuing sharp practice. Current driveway contents:
2021 V60 Cross Country B5
2009 FL2 dog bus and shooting wagon

On Order: 2023 Fisker Ocean Ultra - deposit paid.

I had to buy one in 2018, the LR replacement model I got was actually black and grey and yes, I thought it was expensive then. Now, the current pricing is insane! I suspect there are other LR models as well as with a similar GB damper but different model number.

I'm surprised it's listed as obsolete,
as I believe it's the same damper as used on the Evoque. Exclamation DAVE.

It's not necessarily an obsolete part, it's that it's linked to an obsolete vehicle. Note it's used on the Evoque Mk1, not the later version, so nothing currently in production uses this now.

So magic JLR accountants hit the "f**k 'em" button hard.

Common tactic they have been using for at least the last 6 or 7 years. Current driveway contents:

United Kingdom 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Rimini Red

I ordered 2 a couple of weeks ago for 20.79 each, plus £5 shipping from LR direct, for genuine LR parts, so they're still available at sensible money at the moment. I was checking over the vehicle for the MOT and noticed the rear LH shock was leaking, and also the RH rear mass damper wasn't attached to its pin.
So decided to order the mass dampers at the same time as the shocks. Unfortunately AF didn't have the mass dampers, so I had to get them from elsewhere, but they were under £50 delivered, for the pair. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.
Hyundai Ionic 5 Ultimate on order.

I've just replaced the shocks on mine (first time)... there was no damper installed with the original shocks.

Out of Stock.

Everyone who still lists the old price around £20 each is out of stock - everyone who has stock is quoting the exciting new opportunity to have your pants pulled down.

I'll happily tigerseal or similar the existing ones. Just such a clear example of JLR's policy of kicking the living crap out of their parts customers. Current driveway contents:

If you can’t sell new cars because of a chip shortage, disposable income shortage or whatever, then the parts customer becomes the obvious target.

Same with dealerships - when car sales slump for the above reasons, their workshops are compelled to contribute more to sales revenues. Those showroom coffees don't pay for themselves you know…

“Hello Sir, just a quick call to let you know your service is almost complete but our technician has noticed that your brakes, tyres, battery, shock absorbers and wiper blades are all perilously near to causing a fifth eight car pile up and a great loss of life. Fortunately though, we have them all in stock and can fit them immediately for only £national debt less 5% valued customer discount.”

Cynical? Moi?

They've been doing this for at least 6 or 7 years. Certainly was common practice when Nick was still Parts Manager at Yeovil Land Rover. He used to tear his hair out at some of the price gouging and that rationale was never hidden: "It's seen a small uplift in demand, nobody makes a pattern part and we no longer sell the car, so think of a number and up the price goes."

The pricing is so blunt that if JLR sold 1 of a particular item a month, and suddenly sold 2 the next month, their model would see a 100% increase in demand and boom! Up the price goes.

With more common parts any increase is hidden in the noise, but lower volume stuff is very susceptible to this hammer/nut approach. Current driveway contents:

Maybe I was lucky and bought the last pair? Cool

I think I'll tiger seal the damaged one's, so I have a pair of semi working mass dampers to fit in the future. Very Happy 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.
