Freelander 2 2008 humming noise

Hi all, I 'm looking for your thoughts on my current problem.
When vering left my drive train makes a deep humming sound.

I recently got new oil for the gearbox, transfer box, rear diff and haldex to try and find the problem. First was the gearbox and when the oil was drained, found a small battered roller from the bearings. The oil was murky also, but it could be as old as the car. So, Am I right in thinking its the gearbox?
When the noise only happens when turning slightly makes me wonder though. All wheel bearings are spot on. Is strain put on the gears when turning. Your thoughts will be much appreciated before I fork out on a gearbox.

Thanks
Kevin

please correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the gearbox also contain the differential for the front wheels?
This certainly woul be put under strain when turning. but finding bits of bearings in the gearbox oil is a good indicator that the gearbox has (rather than is going to) failed. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the reply.
That was my thoughts, but I'm not sure if the front diff / transfer box is actually part of the gearbox, but is connected. I guess this would come under strain, but hope it's not the problem. If I get a good gearbox, I doubt if the transfer box is included in the price. Time to check on flea bay.

Transfer box is separate from the gearbox - simple bevel gear and pinion.
Differential I believe is part of the main gearbox.

Had the pleasure of replacing my transfer box (PTU) actually took it off, worked out what parts were needed, and put it all back together, then repeated the exercise a couple of weeks later when the parts arrived.

Hi Andy,

If diff is part of the gearbox, does that mean both front drive wheels go from diff, or the transfer box? I seem to remember that only one goes from the diff, but surely that's not correct? If it's the diff that takes both wheels I might be spared a bit of money.

I'm pretty sure that the PTU drives only one front shaft (and the rear shaft of course), the other front is driven from the transmission case itself.

MerlinJ if that's correct, it could be the gearbox. I remembered something like that was the case.

Thanks for the reply.

I am experiencing a similar issue. My noise is on over run predominantly, however steering input also has a bearing on the noise ( no pun intended! ). Austin at bell engineering immediately diagnosed over the telephone as a transfer box issue. I am trying to fit an available slot around my schedule for him to resolve the problem.

Grimdog, Thanks. I used to live by Bell, but now in the Highlands, so no chance of having a specialist looking mine over. My noise is during drive. When getting above 40ish the hum comes on and it gets louder as you turn left slightly. I've found a small roller from a bearing in the gearbox, so it could be from the wheel that comes from the gearbox. Have you driven your vehicle with the noise long?

HI we had the same problem on our 2009 FL2, It was the Front Bevel box, and the Haldex needed an overhaul as well. The Diiff nose bearing was also noisy, so replaced that too.

Hi Jagracer,
Thanks for your input. Can you advise what a bevel box is? I'm a Defender guy, but have completed quite a lot of work on our FL1 & 2 over the years, but that has caught me out.
I'm changing the oil and filter in the haldex also, so trying to cover all of the bases.

The LH drive shaft goes from the front differential in the gearbox strait to the LH wheel like any other front wheel drive car.
The RH drive shaft goes from the front differential in the gearbox strait to the RH wheel - it has a support bearing part way along its length and passes through the transfer box without interfering with it, in common with many front wheel drive cars.

coming out of the gearbox on the RH side is a splined sleeve (with the RH drive shaft inside but not touching), this splined sleeve connects to the transfer box and transfers the rotational power to it. The transfer box turns the rotational power through right angles and outputs it to a "normal" propshaft to the rear axle. The propshaft connects to the HALDEX (think of it as a posh clutch) and then on to the rear differential. The rear differential is similar to that used on the vast majority of rear wheel drive cars.

So you have a front wheel drive car, that happens to have a power take off to a rear wheel drive system, don't over think it. The front wheel drive is similar to millions of cars on the road. The trick is using the hollow shaft (sleeve) to take power from the gearbox (pre differential) and send it to a standard rear wheel drive that happens to have a clutch built onto the nose of the rear differential. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Unfortunately yes! I first noticed it around a year ago, I have done around 5k miles since then. I am trying to get it sorted at Bell Engineering, but they are very busy, as am I at the moment. I know it will probably fail altogether and I may get stranded, or worse but the planet's just will not align at the moment.

Thanks. I was a little vague on how the front differential function flowed through the PTU to one front shaft but not to the rear prop shaft.
