Remote webasto.

My remote has stopped turning the Webasto on.

When it happened before, I found the procedure to re-pair it but cannot find it now.

If anyone knows please post.

I remember it needed pulling a fuse in the boot and replacing but can't remember if any thing else was needed.

Is the Webasto working when you start the engine from cold?

Could it be remote battery or perhaps Heater needs a strip down and clean?

Thanks for replying.

Yes, the webasto works normally when engine is started.

I changed the remote battery last year, but will do it again.

When I first got the car, I had same problem and solved it by resyncing the remote using the webasto page instructions.

It requires pulling and reinserting a fuse, seem to recall it was in the "boot", but I can't determine which fuse.

On the previous occasion I found which fuse on the net, but I can't find the page now.

Have had a look in the handbook and there are instructions (in Finnish).

Will get my wife, Finnish, to translate when her soap opera (finnish Eastenders!!) finishes.

Doesn't seem to mention a fuse from my reading.

Will try the procedure tomorrow, bit cold and dark now.

Finnish instructions did not have a solution to problem.

My local, village garage (repairs anything from leaf blowers to combine harvesters) have a good electrician and he will take a look at it and clean the Webasto at the same time.

They do not charge an arm and a leg either.

An update.

Not working.
I took it to the local garage and they have managed to get the remote to connect but could not make it start.
The remote connects, after about 8 seconds it clicks and starts to make a whining noise, after a further 12 seconds all noise ceases.
Any ideas?

A Webasto (maker's name?) is a small diesel burning heater which, in my Freelander's case, warms the engine coolant pre start and until the engine gets up to heat.
It is started with a remote key fob.
In Finland it, or similar by other makers, is quite a common fitting to vehicles, as it can get quite cold here.
My other Freelander has a webasto which comes on automatically after start and a sump/cabin heating system (Defa in my case, but Calex also do them) for pre warming the engine.
The Defa system plugs into the mains electricity, with a 2kw fan heater in the (in my case) passenger footwell in addition to a sump heater.
The Webasto requires certain conditions (temperature, fuel quantity ...) to allow it to operate and it shuts down after a pre determined time or if it is no longer needed.
Diesel heaters, there are several manufacturers, can be fitted in boats, caravans etc. and can be used for heating, cooking etc., in fact any function that requires heat.


An update.
It now works.
I took the car to a second Webasto specialist garage who could not make it work.
They swapped out the new one, which my man had replaced, with another new one which didn't work either.
More in depth investigation discovered the fact that the programme which the supplier (there is, as far as I know, only one in Helsinki) uses to setup the machine, for a particular model of car, had a coding error and both new Webastos had been incorrectly programmed for my car.
Neither garage was ever going to get it to work with this error.
The second garage is expecting to get a refund of my additional costs from the insurance of the suppliers.

My Disco 2 TD5 had an electric coolant heater/pump, which connected to a 240v ac socket and pumped hot coolant around the engine and heater matrix. Great for an early morning cold start. Jules

I'd not seen these for the Freelander, I'm guessing it wasn't even an option in the UK.

The MK2 for galaxy diesel had them fitted as standard in the UK (made by eberspacher) but as standard in the UK they just came on after starting to get the coolant up to temperature quicker. Without it the engine room an absolute age to warm up on a cold day. Colder countries had a programming module in the roof lining which I believe have a remote start and a timed start.

They used to sound like a jet engine starting and used to get people posting questions on forums as they only worked below a certain temperature and once left for the year it was common for the glow plug to fail and this would cause white smoke to pour out of the rear of the car when it was next activated due to low temperature (big clouds of white smoke) -hence the sudden panicked questions! It only happened 5 times and then would shut the system off and you would need to reset it using vagcom. (The ford galaxy MK2 was a VW Sharan in disguise)

Not seen factory fitted to anything else in the UK but they are a popular retro fit to camper vans to provide off grid heating. They tend to use the air heater ones, blowing the hot air directly into the cabin. The current model of choice is a cheap no make Chinese clone, it gives plenty of heat and in the case of the camper that I own is very simple to fit (T into the fuel line to get the diesel supply, run cables direct to battery (fused), drill a hole in the rear step and connect ducting, make an angle iron bracket to attach it under the passenger seat. Total cost of about £100 and they give a good heating system. I wouldn't trust it whilst asleep though!

Webasto also fitted as standard on Disco3/4 and RRS - and indeed on some higher spec Freelander 1 Td4 models. On those models it's a Webasto Thermo Top V.

Never offered as an option for Freelander 2 in the UK but was offered in colder countries.

As regards the cheap Chinese diesel heaters, these are copies of the Webasto Air Top 2000 / Eberspacher Airtronic (all the key heating components are fully interchangeable between the Chinese copies and the branded items, including fuel lifter pumps, glow plugs etc).

In the first lockdown I insulated the roof (but not the walls) on my detached garage and turned it into a gym, fitting one of these clones for heating. My central heating is oil-fired, so I have up to 1200l of heating oil available and conveniently these clones run beautifully on the stuff. I have plumbed in a separate 25l tank that allows me to run the clone heater on a remote sensor/timer to keep the temperature in the garage between 12°C (overnight) and 16°C (when I'm training) / 18°C (when my wife is training) Laughing

25l gives me 15-20 days of heating within those parameters when outside temps are below freezing overnight and circa 6° to 8°C during the day. It also helps keep humidity down, which is a must when you have a few grand in weight training kit sat out there.

This summer I'm going to look at insulating and lining the walls - but at current insulation costs I'm more likely to stick with just using a little more oil for the time being. Current driveway contents:
