Modern 4x4s are more reliant on their traction control systems to make up for limited suspension articulation and clearance which only a solid axle can truly provide.

A triple locked solid axle 4x4 is going to the best off-road but a modern 4x4 with independent suspension and less unsprung weight will be a more comfortable daily vehicle.
I enjoy the challenge of driving off-road but many people just want to get where they are going as easily as possible.

Occasionally we get a cold winter here in the Midlands and then we often get snow on top of ice due to melting during the day and refreezing at night. Little grip is to be had and Birmingham grinds to a halt in less than an inch of snow. In these conditions the FL2 performs better than our Disco2 ever did. The Disco2's mass meant it had a habit of not stopping and also sliding sideways with the road camber into the frozen grass (no curbs around here), which ironically offered better traction.
The FL2 makes a very good winter road car. Jules

I rarely use my Special Terrain Functions, but in normal Road Mode I find the FL2 is very easy, stable, and reassuring to drive, when the weather is very wet and windy.

Interestingly, when I had my LR Experience drive, the instructor said that we should use the Snow Mode more often as it allows the vehicles to cope with very wet and slippery roads, as it softens all the responses to the drivers and the roads inputs.

I would note, though I live on the relatively low, flat, and mild Somerset Levels, I see hundreds (if not thousands) of 4x4 passenger vehicles in and around the area. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Ian, an instructor at LRE Dunkeld also advised me to use grass and snow when heavy rain and floods were about.
I was there for the updated zDisco 5. What a machine but I,m afraid £80k is beyond me.

Update on my use of 'special programs' - used rarely as I live in 'Tropical? Somerset'.

Having recently to need to travel across country on some icy roads, I experimented with the different modes.

I found that using the Ice, Grass, Etc, Mode with Sport selected, produced a very controlled mode of driving.
The gears were completely in under my control so it was easy to negotiate some of the twistier, hilly parts to use the engine to govern speed completely.

It felt very safe.

I am afraid that even though I have had FL2s for some 10 years, I still have yet to make anything like full use of it's clever tricks. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

This is why FL2 is a car i am likely to keep for a long time.
Not interested in driving a battery (EV) and want something i can learn on (servicing/maintenance) and therefore keep costs down.
Plan to take Freelander on some guided off road trips in GB to fully appreciate its abilities and enjoy it Thumbs Up
