What grease is transparent ?

I have a Makita UD2500 wood chipper ( the slow rotating horizontal cutter type) which was making a worn bearing sound.
I dismantled the reduction gearbox (sun and planets) and found the phosphor-bronze end bearing dry which I lubricated with some LM grease. This cured the problem.

My question relates to the type of grease used in the rest of the gearbox - its thick and has a high tack - much harder to wipe off than LM grease and most interesting of all is that is crystal clear except where there has been gear wear and now that is grey.
Anyone know what this grease might be and is it compatible with LM grease ?
I shall ask the same of Makita but I doubt I will get a timely response. Jules

Its probably a silicone grease. But I cant think why you would use a silicone grease in a gearbox comprised of only metal parts. Jules

The response from Makita was unhelpful. According to their tech dept, they didnt know what grease was in it and any old grease will probably do. Jules

Laughing but alas no - thats pale yellow and this is clear and even more tacky than vaseline. I've never seen anything like it. Jules

Hi , Silicone grease is also transparent , it's used on rubber seals . I use a silicone spray (Lidl's ) , spray onto a cloth - then go round the door seals , this prevents them sticking to the door pillar when it get's frosty .....next week where I live Exclamation

Yeah. I use silicone grease on my black rubber O-rings for my SCUBA stuff.

Interestingly you have to use a non-silicone grease for silicone O-rings - which are not black; by design I suppose.


This use of silicone grease prompted to ask why did Makita use a transparent grease (which appears to be silicone) in a gearbox that has no rubber O-rings.

To paraphrase the answer from Makita, appears to be "it was what we had at the time" Laughing Jules
