Freelander 2 2010 HSE auto

Still learning about my FL2.
Enjoying very much and so good to drive.
Question, Once we get the cold weather up here if i am not using the car i give the battery a wee charge now and then to keep it up.
Now, on my old Disco i just connected the cables and left it charging away fine.
Can i do this ok on the Freelander2 or do i need to disconnect the battery before charging?
Just do not know enough about modern electronics. Jim A

i use a CTEK MX5 on my Freelander 2 and charge it through the live socket behind the handbrake using the cigarette lighter adaptor. There is no issue I'm aware of charging with the battery connected which i do on my D4.

I also use a CTEK but with trailing lead from battery, definitely no need to remove battery terminals.

Have now owned my FL2 for nearly 4 months.
New tyres, service, RH wishbone replaced.
Lovely to drive .
Intend to keep for a while, might even be my last car as I will be 80 on next birthday.

My son keeps his classic 1996 Porsche in our garage with a CTEK MX5 attached. He is away for months at at time and it just sits there trickling away, it goes through the indicator lights slowly then after about 10 days of inactivity the second green light comes on (whatever that means) . Seems to do the trick, I start it up every couple of months and it fires up no problem. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Another vote for CTEK, I keep my Jaguar XKR topped up with one as it doesn't get much use these days. Two Optimates on my ride on mowers, and a collection of Lidl chargers for everything else. Great value and longevity in my opinion.

I have a Victron 10 amp Bluetooth charger. If I bought another one I would get the 15 amp model.

It trickle charges the starter battery and then I charge my auxiliary batteries.

Very happy with it & the Bluetooth data is nice to have. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I use the car sometimes only twice in a a week and sometimes 4-5 times a week.
In this case i think my LIDL charger(good equipment) will be better.
Just a thing i have about batteries. Not intending to charge up every week, just when i think a boost would be good.
Stay on a hill and remember having 2-3 feet of snow and temp down to minus 12C.
Not for a while, mark you.

If you are using the car a few times a week why not just buy a fresh new battery, if you are using the car it will be fine when I first read your post I thought the car would be sat weeks on end.

maybe i am over thinking this. I don,t have a problem with the battery.
Yuasa YBX56110 in good condition, actually looks very new. Anybody know if there is a build date on a battery.
I usually label items like that when fitted.
Good readings, starts very quickly.
I just like to keep ahead of the game and make sure that even in the worst weather my car will start.
Comes from being a D2 owner and a car that really needed a good battery,
I had just fitted a Yuasa 640 18 months before i sold it and with Covid had only done about 1000 miles,
Probably a personal thing.

Hi Jim,

the battery date is normally stamped into the top of one of the battery posts as a 4 digit code so a 1318 would be 13 week of 2018.

If your battery is an AGM type battery use the Winter setting on the lidl charger (its what I have ) thats their AGM charging mode

I plug into my tow socket if I need to put the charger on but never needed since the new battery on and it can be left a few weeks fine

( think good practice is dont connect Direct to the battery posts but use the jump start post or a ground point for the earth)
