When I drive uphill and have to stop I push my footbrake.
If I pull up my handbrake and then release the footbrake, the car moves a little backward.

I also think it move somewhat forward which I think I've noticed when moving forward and not releasing the handbrake in time.

It feels like I have a few inches of loose movement on the handbrake.

This is of course on a manual drive.

Is this normal as I have never had that with any other car I've driven.

mine does it too. Its Just over a year old now and has always done it. According to a Landrover technician I recently spoke with, he said it is normal. Freelander 2 XS 2.2 TD4 Met Black, with Winter pack, 18" alloys with General Grabber AT2 wellies, MANTEC Sump and Tank Guards

It is normal. Mine does it too as does my Dad's.  Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass

Hello,the reason the hand brake lets the car roll back is because it works of the axle not the wheels.The hand brake is crap anyway. I have a LR2GS with privacy glass and winter pack

It's quite annoying as it makes it difficult to find the acceleration point on a steep hill.

PS mine is brand new, only 800kms (500miles).

At least, as it's normal, I shouldn't be too worried.

If it's areally steep hill switch on the hill descent - that should activate the anti roll back function and you don't need the handbrake

No it's mostly on a trafficlights and queueing at highway offramps.

My handbrake is excellent but the roll is normal.

It happens because the foot brake and handbrake work on different systems.

Obviously the foot brake works on all the disc's, however the handbrake works on drums which are integral in the rear hub assemblies. When you stop with the footbrake and apply the handbrake there is always a small amount of movement as the load transfers from the discs to the drums. The amount of movement at the centre of the hub is very small but is magnified at the full diameter of the wheel.

This effect is common to any vehicle with a similar brake system, some handbrakes operate on a separate set of pads but operating on the same discs, these are often less effective than our drum brake system, but are still subject to small amounts of movement when the load transfers from the foot brake to the handbrake.

The only system you should not see any movement is where the foot brake operates drums and the handbrake operates the same shoes, these are becoming less popular as more cars are equipped with discs on all four wheels ... Stornoway Grey GS ...
