There is no need.
There's only need for them to not hold anymore the light block and when you'll extract the lights they will follow and fall.

Cross purposes… I think Alex is referring to getting the actual screws out from behind the tailgate after they have been unscrewed where SYFL2 is asking how the screws are actually unscrewed without opening the tailgate…

I think Question

Yes Reggie the screw heads are inaccessible until the tailgate is lifted.

The video is quite clear in that a thin screwdriver can access the screws, and even worse if it’s a thief they will not have any qualms about forcing the screwdriver in the gap and damaging your paintwork as well! Regards

David

Lovely i6 has now gone, but not me......

Please let me know if anything in my post offends you, as I may wish to offend you again......

I didn’t see the video,so putting tamper proof screws in stops the light being removed but they won’t know there are tamper proof screws there so they would just trash your tailgate trying ? I suppose it’s some kind of bonus.

I guess we'll end up engraving our reg number into
the lights again, as we did on the facelift D2. Rolling Eyes
I guess I'm fairly safe as it's they are the first generation on mine. DAVE.

First generation is also easy to nick in the same way, but being "classic", with bulbs, doesn't stir up interest.
But who knows, one on need may look for some... Confused

Of course another way to slow the thieving scum down, could be
the fitting of the Plasticky Light guards,
as I belive the inner fixing's are rivnutted to the bodywork. Whistle DAVE.

But who wants those horrible looking light guards?
I had a quick look at mine and couldn't see that the screws were in line with the gap between boot and light fitting

They’re not inline I suspect they just trash the edge of your tailgate.

In the video he didn't trash his tail gate. On that basis, I just went out to 'steal' one of my own lights.

Being cautious, I went at it a very carefully with a cross head (6mm dia blade) screwdriver, first with the tailgate open and the screwdriver firmly angled against the light to see if the angle worked…. It did so I then closed the tailgate and managed to undo both screws half way without touching paintwork.

Took a while as the screwdriver was perhaps a little too large to engage in the screw heads adequately but
a thinner bladed screwdriver with a decent cross head would, (I believe), have been very easy.

I was sure somebody had put up a link to appropriate screws c/w a matching driver bit along with a picture showing yellow screw caps…. I was thinking black screw caps rather than yellow though.
