My rear brake was making a rubbing noise when applied that gave me the indication of a slightly warped disc. I changed the disc and pads, but it still makes the noise. Looking back through the service history it looks like a rear hub was fitted and then the vehicle went back to have a noise investigated, which the garage seemed to say was the disc shield rubbing. I'm thinking they never got to the bottom of the issue.

If I put a dial gauge to the disc it does show that it doesn't run true. My question is, is it possible for a hub to not be fitted correctly?
The disc I took off lay flat on glass as did the new one out of the box, so the discs are good. The caliper is all good and free etc.

Did you have all the wheel nuts bolted up when checking the run-out? Was the run-out within limits? If the disc was warped, you’d get a juddering through the brake pedal when braking. What about testing the other side and if that is within limits, swap the rear discs over. If you still have run-out it’s got to be the hub flange or wheel bearing. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

All nuts done up. My feeling is that the disc isn't running true and as the disc in isolation checks out I can only assume the hub or bearings are incorrectly fitted. Think I will get it in to the landy specialist I use to give it all the once over.

For the rotor to rub enough to make a noise, the run-out would be millimetres, not hundredths of a millimetre.

Have you checked for corrosion on the hub face, where the rotor mates up? Any corrosion on the hub face will cause rotor run out.

What actual figures were you getting with your gauge? What gauge were you using? 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.

I would think first step is; is it getting to hot to touch?
Where is it hot drum part of disc or caliper
If caliper check slider isn't jambed
If drum check handbrake my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

It could be a few things in the brake area, normally anything rubbing produces heat, it could be the brake shoes aren't correctly secured, think I would check the caliper first. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Do a full brake strip down.

Disc doesn't get hot at all and the noise is only present under braking. I have stripped the brakes more than once and everything checks out, other than the disc not running true. This is why I was wondering if the hub could be incorrectly seated/fitted.

So, while you’ve got the disk off check for run out of the surface that the disk mounts to on the hub. While you’re doing that check that the mounting surfaces are clear on both the hub and the disk. The handbrake shoes take no part in braking while moving so as long as they are fitted correctly they can be discounted (unless the disk is moving off centre somehow!).

There can be noise from the discs caused by rust on the periphery and inner pad area especially if the pads have been replaced without cleaning the pad mounting area, it will disappear over time my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Have you tried rotating the wheel manually and getting someone to gradually apply the brakes - first pedal, then hand brake to see if that indicates where the noise is coming from ? Jules
