2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Orkney Grey

Rear diff oil leak

Hi

I have 2011 Freelander 2 and it has a slight oil leak on the rear diff, see photo. I have been told it’s a big job to sort as it’s plate on plate with no gasket, advised not to bother touching it, just keep an eye on the oil level in the rear diff.

Any thoughts anyone? Many Thanks!

Looks like there is a stud sticking out on the LH side- that's not correct.
Has someone been messing with the diff before ? Jules

Not sure, only had it a 10 months - oil leak was on mot May 2019.

No nasty noises and it drives fine.

Not a biggy to keep topping it up i suppose, easy once you've done it the first time - depending on how much oil it's going through of course.

If I remember correctly the later differentials use studs and nuts in place of bolts.

As for the oil

1. The differential has a breather, is a tube attache, is it plugged?

2. Are you sure that the differential wasn’t over filled

Whoever told you it is plate on plate is talking BS! There is an O ring seal there. A very simple fix really, more time consuming getting the diff out. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

I’m guessing “someone” is not a mechanic. Let alone a mechanic that works on these.
Moreover, it is not responsible to spill petroleum products on the ground.

Yes, that's the later diff... wish mine had the studs, I'm on my second diff but it's the older model so I'm nervous it will also fail eventually.

If you have to get your diff replaced, try to get the later model I think it's supposed to be improved and more durable. Anyone have experience with that?

I have the original diff. 110000 kms. just had her 2nd fluid change. no issues to date. (touch wood).
I always use the “all wheel drive” feature. Occasionally the other 2 features for sand and ruts.
I don’t really like the feel of front wheel drive so I never purposely select that option. Guy Pensa

I'm not sure that's accurate, as all diffs have 7 bolts. I've got a 2015 diff in mine, it has bolts, just like the early ones.
The only difference between early and late is the size of the pinion tail bearing, which is 1.5mm wider after 2011..

Here's a picture of a 60k miles 2015 diff.

You'll notice an oil tide mark, lots of residue from heated oil, oh and no studs in the case.

Is there a gasket or O-ring? Or is the diff sealed with just a layer of sealant ?
I cannot see anything on here ...

Stupid me. Should have looked to the JLR manual in the first place..
Its here - an O ring seals the diff

Which must be LR030846 in the previous diagram Jules
