2009 Freelander 2 TD4_e XS Manual Ipanema Sand

Evoque 18s on my 2009 FL2

Popped these on the car today, Evoke 18s rather than the standard 17s I've been using for 12 years. My 17s needed new tyres yet these 18s with brand new rubber only cost £525.00 on eBay. A 'no brainer' really.

Delighted with the way they look and it has improved the driving feel. The perfect balance between comfort and road holding round the bends. Glad I didn't opt for 19s in the end.

The old 17s I'll stick on here for sale, hopefully they'll find a good home.

The tyres look pretty good on the ones you’ve taken off. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Not on corrugated roads.

Tyres at 24 PSI. The 18 inch 'poodle' rims with larger 255/60R18 tyres are ok, but one really should have 17 inch rims, especially when driving on these roads day after day.

Yes, the two rear ones have hardy worn at all, looking almost new. Fronts are mostly worn. Surprising how they wear so unevenly, I know it runs front wheel drive mostly but I wasn't expecting such imbalance of wear.

I didn't realise that TBH Richard. Do you know if it's the same for 2009 models? I bought my FL2 thinking it was 4wd all the time! Kind regards.

Someone on here will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that they run about 80/20 in favour of torque to the front wheels in normal conditions. The Haldex kicks torque to the rear if it senses slipping - by comparing rpm of each wheel independently. If the fronts or rears rotate slightly faster or slower than the other axle, it shares torque out to get the power down.

As a point of note, hence the need to keep even tyre pressures all round, otherwise a low pressure will cause a reduction in the circumference of that wheel and a higher rpm that the other wheels. The Haldex then send power elsewhere. Not good for long term care of the system.

Someone here can inform further, if I've made any mistakes.

I have a 2009 model. I can confirm that it is definitely not an all wheel drive car . It does drive 4 wheels via the haldex , but unlike a Defender or a Subaru it’s not full time symmetrical . Richard has covered the salient points why it isn’t . You may or may not know that there were also front wheel drive only versions of the vehicle produced , and some lower spec Haldex equipped cars that did not have the Terrain Response system .

I’ve never found the FL2 with Haldex to be lacking and with the right tyres it’s a very capable bit of kit off road or in snow . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership
