Lower gear selector spring - not the usual one that breaks!

I have the gear selector button stuck in on my auto TD4. I opened up the gear knob to replace the usual torsion spring that breaks as I know it's a common fault and happened on my previous Freelander 2.

I was surprised to find that the spring was in place and intact and the button was actually functioning fine with the knob removed.

The fault is with the rod inside the selector shaft, it's stuck down. I lifted it up with my fingers and it dropped back down again.

So it looks like there is a second spring at the bottom, inside the selector assembly itself that has gone. That needs to keep the rod pushed up inside the gear lever shaft.

Has anyone replaced this before? How do you get to it, is it easy to disassemble the gear selector assembly?

Update : I managed to get to the gear selector assembly by removing the center console - it looks like the gear selector itself is faulty. I'll look for a second hand one from a breakers.
