Just had a look on Bell engineering’s Facebook page & Austin has been busy replacing a power transfer unit ( PTU ) on a Disco Sport @ 44,000 miles, when will Land Rover learn to fit more robust bearings

Is the PTU actually a LR part or is it generic as supplied by Aisin the gearbox manufacturer? LR tend to get the blame for many items used on other cars failing, either there is a difference in specification to other manufacturers or for some reason it is either ignored or LR have a problem with either installation or involved software. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I don't buy that excuse at all. If I am buying a LR product I expect them to specify and install parts that are suitable for their cars and intended use. It's called fitness for purpose. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

The Disco Sport uses a 9 speed ZF auto gearbox not an 6 speed Aisin like the auto FL2.

It strange that the Freelander 1 was always slated for having a fragile 4WD system. However in reality was actually pretty strong, and would normally only fail due to incorrect tyre maintenance.

The Freel2 seems to have some inheritan design weaknesses, which is a shame, as it let's the whole package down.

I'm currently rebuilding an Evoque diff for my 2008 SE, using my own judgment for the pinion pre-load (I couldn't turn it by hand), and will be using a decent oil when it's back together too. I'm also adding a magnetic drain plug, simply to keep future maintenance simple.

You've have thought that LR would have solved drive train weaknesses by the time the DS and later Evoque was released. 2009 Rimini Red SE TD4. Soon to be sold.

And the other side of the coin has my 2012 doing 152000mls and still on the original running gear inc diff /haldex etc and still on the original oils in those units as it only ever had Land Rover servicing schedules as it was a lease car.

The post doesn't state whether the car is auto or manual, Aisin made the manual box on the Fl2 as well as the auto, no idea about the DS, but same applies, as dondiddy says there are Fl2's that have no problems, I suspect that a check on 4 x 4 of other makes with the same or similar drive system will show similar failures.
The fact it only has 42k on the clock doesn't indicate its year, you can still get Fl2's with less than 60k on the clock, this is not a defence of LR, but there are very few facts relating to the post. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

The manual gearbox in the FL2 is not made by Aisin it's made by Getrag.

The Disco sport is fitted with a ZF gearbox.

ISTR that several years ago manufacturers earned more money from fleet sales where cars were generally kept for a maximum of 3 years or 100,000miles, so they just put warranties and life span expectations that covered 3ys/100k and played the law of averages on failures.
This boosted fleet sales, meaning more profit and past those time scales they didn't care.

LR seem to have the same thought process, put a long time frame on products and its then not their concern. They will just deal with failures within warranty on a case by case basis.
