I good friend of mine can only access his property via a ford, usually only a few inches deep.

Not sure it's actually reversing more the photo was taken at the point the driver was moving through the gears especially if an auto. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

You can't protect against stupidity.

The depth guage shows water is almost 3ft deep. Why would you even try! Andy

That's the one I was describing, most of those are autos and he should have made it, I think it came to a halt on the way out for some reason. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Hi,
there are quite a few Utube clips on "Rufford ford" posted recently
Most of the failed attempts are toooooo much speed on entry Rolling Eyes
At 2Ft deep it should not end up on your windscreen Laughing been through there many times also aborted on a few occasions

Thumbs Up .
my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf

If you run the video it definitely shows the second Merc successfully reversing all the way across the ford. It surely stops the bow (stern?) wave swamping the engine, but I would be more worried about the exhaust back pressure stopping the engine working.

Also is it the camera angle/movement, or is the first Merc starting to float sideways as it comes to a halt?

The only fatalities I have heard of in my area, over the years, have involved vehicles getting in too deep, starting to lift due to buoyancy, loosing traction, and being swept downstream into deeper water. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

First Merc seemed to initially float, if it was a diesel I suspect he has real problems with a bow wave that large, if petrol swamped, second Merc my failure didn't notice it was a video Very Happy but I think that the exhaust pressure would overcome the water pressure trying to enter a small diameter pipe as it won't be a direct injection up the exhaust pipe. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I suspect the first (black) Merc now needs a new engine.

My son accidently destroyed my Skoda's engine following his mum, in her FL2, through a small flood - too much speed caused a bow wave and hydraulocked the engine. Luckily a new engine was paid for by the insurance. Jules

It will be interesting in years to come to see the effect of this on an EV. In theory they should work OK underwater if the motors and batteries etc are well sealed. Come to think of it diesel/electric submarines are actually hybrids and have been for 100 years so wading though half a metre should be a doddle. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
