New member looking at purchasing questions

Evening all,
I am looking at buying a Freelander 2 and have started looking at local cars that are all the Si4 variant. I have just been to see my first one and had my first test drive. I also have a Range Rover Vogue when I am in the UK and I can see how the comparison as a baby Rangey was made.
The car I looked at drove very well and everything worked although when I had a look under the bonnet I did notice what looked like a missing cooling pipe going to what I could not see as I couldn't get a good look at it. It also appeared that the engine bay had maybe had a radiator burst as there was a crystalised substance on some of the areas in the engine bay that I couldn't identify.
There were some wear marks on the sound insulation at the back of the engine bay that made me think extensive surgery and an earth strap was disconnected by the right hand side suspension turret.
I have included a photo of the suspicous item and any assistance or top tips would be greatly appreciated with respect to purchasing second hand.
Cheers
Frogman

Maybe photos don't show for the first 3 posts.

I have a Si4, when you can post a photo I can compare it. But on the face of it, if in doubt give the car a miss, more will come along. Patience is a virtue! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Chaps,
Thanks for the responses and not sure how the photo thing works so I'll try again here and see if we get anywhere. I did some youtubing last night but came up with nothing so I am still confused as to what the thing does that is circled in red and how the car drove perfectly if there is something missing.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

It's there now. Common sense isn't very common.

Looks like an engine breather valve with the hose disconnected? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

It is at the front behind the radiator maybe a third of the way across laterally, dificult to get my hand to it and if it wasn't for the fact that it had just driven for 20 minutes I would say itlooks like a coolant hose should be attached. Air con worked so unlikely to be a part of that, car is a 2013 LHD Si4.

There would be a bit of a leak if it was not blanked off! It's probably a generic Ford part.

Thanks for the effort on that chaps, very much appreciated, I knew that it couldn't be anything serious having driven it for 20 minutes without fault but it is a bit alarming to see what looks like a missing coolant hose!

Not surprisingly mine looks exactly like Lightwater's so it's normal.

What I would say is the Si4 varient gives you a great engine alternative to the diesel. The Ford ecoboost engine gives you 240 hp ,it's smooth, quiet and (touch wood) reliable. I've kept mine for over 5 years which is unusaual but we see no reason to change it. It does exactly what we want. It's a good shopping car, it's comfortable on long trips across Europe and it copes well with our extreme winter conditions (this week snow and -22c).

I have had to change a door motor and the Haldex pump but that's it apart from routine servicing. Haldex pump failure is fairly common even on low mileage cars of the age you're looking at so check the terrain response is working correctly. Neither are a big deal and I got the parts shipped from UK and fitted locally.

Good luck with whatever you decide. driving on the right side
