removing oil filter 2012 fl2

i attempted an oil and filter change today on my 2012 fl2 ; i could not budge the filter cover ; it was must have tightened by a very strong person ; are they all that tight ? i didnt want to damage the plastic cover so i left it

What was you using? 27mm swivel head ratchet spanner is the best. Thumbs Up

They do get very tight sometimes.
I thought I had tightened mine up just right but when I came to later unscrewing it, I was worried that I would strip the thread- it was that tight. I continued unscrewing with the flexible 27mm ring spanner and it was OK in the end and not damaged. Jules

When they are tight coming out, it’s just the rubber seal gone dry. Lube the new one well and it’ll go in a lot easier than it came out. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I'd carry on with the spanner - it that wont turn it then nothing else will that wont damage it, as you are into pipe wrench territory then Jules

In this situation I'd probably buy a new oil filter housing and have that one on hand. Along with any gaskets needed to replace it.

Then apply torque until it either comes off or rounds out. If it rounds out, install the new filter housing.

If it comes off but you think it's damaged, use the cap from the housing you bought. Otherwise return the parts.

This is what I use for the filter, the socket is 36mm. Tighten gently until it stops firmly, then no further. Yes, lube the new o-ring with oil first.

Edit: Maybe my engine is different, it's the 3.2 I6. The nut shape on the plastic filter cover is 36mm, not 27mm.

I would agree with Jules I always change my oil every 10k but the filter cap is always tight and like Jules just tighten as much as I think is enough its a bit frightening but works OK with the spanner

As it’s such a pig of a job to replace that filter I bet it’s not changed by many garages during a service Censored they will only drop the oil.

It really isn’t a pig of a job for anyone that works in a garage - especially with the right tools and a ramp. A part-time diyer without the correct tools doing it in the street outside his house maybe but not a mechanic. There’s plenty worse than those! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Hmm as a reasonably competent DIYer with a reasonable selection of tools it's an awkward S.O.B. I am just attempting it for the first time and with the space restriction and angle I'm dammed if I can get my 27mm socket on whilst attached to either ratchet or swivel head - I've just ordered the 27mm swivel head ratchet spanner and meanwhile the car is stuck awaiting its arrival as I dropped the old oil first.

i managed to get the swivel head socket on the cover ; but it was REALLY tight ; with the angle and being led on my back i couldnt get much leverage on it . Next time i will cut off the opened ended spanner end and slip on a bit of tubing for a bit more leverage

If you require more access just remove the radiator fan assembly. You then have enough room to get your socket on. Keep the ratchet spanner for next time Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

I hope all is well by the time the spanner comes- back in the 90s working on a ford i dropped the oil before lunch came back and finished the service. I then had to drop the sump to get oil pressure back. the old dirty ford engines, all the half caked oil and crud on the gauze had hardened begin left in the air.... Again i stress it was an old dirty ford engine.... Stewart

Thank you some excellent suggestions -

John D - I got an open ended spanner on (at an angle) and used enough force that I was convinced the plastic nut was just distorting and I didn't want to round it off.

Gasman - In my nightmares I thought of removing the radiator but really didn't want to do that! It never occurred to me to think of just removing the fan assembly - DOH Embarassed

S Walker - I didn't even know that was possible - you're really not helping Very Happy

Back in the real World - Mrs L demanded that the Freelander was removed from in front of the garage and she NEEDED it Wednesday am - spanner due Thursday. I've bit the bullet and poured in 5.9L of expensive oil and will do the Job again over Easter - Grrrrr
