160 vs 150bhp

I've recently changed from a 2007 TD4 manual, 160bhp to a 2013 TD4 GS 150, again manual. I expected the 10bhp to make very little difference but there seems to be a noticeable difference in the power delivery, both very good but quite different. The 160 seemed to have more low down torque whereas the 150 seems to need more revs but is quicker. Just wondering if anyone else can comment on whether this is normal?

Here is the LR Media release for MY2011.

More refined 150PS TD4 and 190PS SD4 with four-wheel drive

The upgraded direct injection turbo diesel is available in two forms - 150PS on the TD4, and 190PS on the SD4. Both produce 20Nm more torque than the outgoing model increasing to a substantial 420Nm for punchy, refined performance. As well as being upgraded from EU4 to EU5, both versions have a new variable geometry turbocharger and are re-calibrated from scratch to deliver the new levels of power, meet emissions regulations and reduce CO2.

Yes, likewise I hadn't realised that so many changes were made. Showing my lack of knowledge here but can someone enlighten me as to what advantages a variable geometry turbo offers?

Basically by varying the inlet vanes, you can speed up the air to the turbo, at a lower speed, and increase the low rev torque.

higher low-end maximum torque:
a variable geometry turbocharger can improve the maximum torque of the engine in the low-end area due to the ability of the turbocharger to provide a higher air mass quantity; this translates into more fuel being injected, hence a higher mean effective pressure and torque.

My Sister has the top or the range Evoque with an oil burner & I have the Ford 2.0L Ecoboost in my Freelander, it's a much nicer engine. Now with all the acoustic insulation I have installed her Evoque feels like an old oil banger from a different century!

It's a pity that even though LR made the cars in England that they exported all the petrol ones.

A tad misleading! The "old" turbocharger is also variable geometry, standard tech in modern diesel cars.

However, the new one is bigger and water-cooled.

Snap..like you I changed my 2007 Td4 Auto to 2013 Td4 Auto. As my son has the 2007 now, I've driven them back to back, the 2007 definitely feels a little more responsive on pickup, which was a bit of a surprise.

Variable geometry turbos are also very prone to the vanes sticking. Check out the many YouTube posts on the subject. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.
