Ipod kit

Hi guys,

quick question for anyone that has fitted the ipod kit in their Freely.

For the older type of kit - the one that comes with the ipod cradle - do you have to use the cradle? Or can you just route the cables to the glovebox and connect the ipod in there?

If you do have to use the cradle - does the cradle have to be mounted on the dash or can it again be routed to the glovebox?

Cheers guys

Peter

Hi Peter

I have recently installed the older ipod kit and initially fitted it in the glove box. It works fine but is a bit of a pain to change you tune selections or playlist. The steering wheel controls let you chnage playlist and switch between shuffle on and off but if you cant see the ipod its hard to know what you have selected.

Anyway i now have the cradle fitted to the right of the steering wheel on a clever Brodit no holes bracket and find it all works great, wheel controls let you change things and you can see what you have selected.

I can send a photo of the install if you want.

David

Thanks David,

if you've got a photo of the install that would be great.

I know it's not ideal to put the ipod in the glovebox but I'm not really keen on having the cradle etc in view on the dash.

I'm glad to know you can put the cradle in the glovebox. I've got the option of picking up one of those older kits for a good price, so I might go for that rather than spend the extra on the newer version.

Thanks for that - looks like a good alternative to drilling a hole in the dash!

Where do you run the cable from the cradle to the ACM module? Looks like it goes round behind the steering column somewhere?

Also how did you fix the cradle to the brodit mount? Did you use the original fixings in some way? Any chance of a quick walk through/tutorial on what you did?

Cheers

Well I managed to fit the kit this afternoon. All seems to work ok so far!

I had to modify the install a bit - the instructions tell you to screw the usb cable holder to the bracket that holds the glovebox catch, but the screw they tell you to use is nowhere near long enough!! *unless I mis-read or missed something*

So for now the usb cable is just lying loose in the glovebox.

I also just have the cradle loose in the glovebox too, I think I'm going to invest in the brodit mount to fit it at the right hand side of the steering wheel instead of drilling a hole in the dash. That way I can remove the kit if I swap the car for another Freely in the future.

Is it correct that the ipod should be charging all the time when connected to the kit? It seems to do so even with the radio and ignition off. I don't want to go leaving the ipod in there if I'm going to come back to a flat battery after a while.
