Strange gearbox issue

Hi, my Freelander 2 has suddenly developed a strange gearbox issue whereby it is very difficult to select reverse and second gear. It started at the weekend and takes me about three attempts to grab either of those gears.

I have lubricated all the cables even those under the battery box and also tried the reset of the reverse solenoid method.

I'm going to try the adjustment of the gear cables this weekend but I'm a bit unsure of the method.

The gears are not as positive as they were going into fourth and sixth either yet first, third and fifth and exactly as they used to be.

Any help appreciated.

Will be interesting to see what is suggested for this as it sounds like you've done all the usual fixes already. Learned to drive in 2011.
Bought a Micra - great little car
"Upgraded" to Kia Sportage - hated it
Proper upgrade to FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - tailgate paint issues, fuel gauge rewire, transfer box failure at 36k miles, clutch at 60k
Reconditioned diff at 70k ish
Sold at 84k and now on a DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental

Can the car be run without the reverse solenoid fitted? Just wanted to test that it's definitely not that before I continue.

All I did last time was unplug it and leave it for ten mins then plug it back in on the advice of a few threads I found via search.

I had a look at my car yesterday and can see what I believe to be the problem, at some point without my knowledge the mount for the gear linkage cables has come apart. This is the under the battery box the cable slips into a type of steel collar and has a plastic or rubber looking piece either side. Someone has ziptied the mount up in order for the cables to operate as they should but this has now snapped.

I have re ziptied it for now but I am going to have to buy a secondhand gear linkage cable and either get a garage to fit it or have a go myself depending on how hard it looks.
