Oily Intercooler ... on the outside

Hi Chaps, new Freelander 2 owner here. Had it a few months - 2012 XS TD4 Manual with 155k on the clock. New cambelt, clutch and recon gearbox. Just got round to replacing the brakes and fixing a leaking windscreen washer - turned out to be a split hose that runs along the inside of the front bumper - on removing I discovered a lot of oil on both ends of the intercooler. I've searched and found others on here with this on one end, but not both. The hose clips were tight, and all looks in good condition, no oil inside the hoses or where they fix to the intercooler. No signs of loads of oil inside the intercooler, probably coz it's all on the outside!
I've cleaned everything but i don't know how i can tell if the ends of the intercooler are allowing oil to escape - I guess I could fill it with petrol/diesel and see if it leaks, but wondered if anyone else had this issue?

Thanks!
