United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Tonga Green

I attached a short length of hose and a long length of pipe to a priming bulb.

Short length to filter output (light blue box) and longer piece down to a bowl/collection vessel.

Pumped bulb until diesel flowed without bubbles.
Removed bulb hose.
Re-attached the output hose to filter.
Started first time. Was a bit hesitant but soon picked up.

PS - Attach rear pipe (above light blue box) not attached in my picture before priming.

 Discovery 4 HSE - Aintree Green
Freelander 2 TD4 SE Automatic - Tonga Green
Defender XS - Tonga Green - Gone Now
Freelander 1 Td4 ES Manual - Epsom Green - Gone Now *
Freelander 1 Td4 Kalahari SE - Epsom Green - Gone Now
Freelander 1 XEi - Epsom Green - Gone Now

Having just changed my fuel filter am interested in knowing what are the purposes of the 4 pipes in my attached pic A,B,C and D
Am asking as it says to prime the filter so which hole do I put in diesel. Not got any diesel so will use ATF.

I use a vacuum pump on A that way you are drawing all air out never had a problem

Hi

Since I made the last post have found out the purpose for the 4 pipes. I filled up the filter via orifice A, pipe A still had fuel in it, and she started okay just hope she keeps running okay.

I'm going to do mine at the weekend and I reckon Denboy's method is the most logical to me, Vacuum pump on return to tank pipe fitting (A) will draw diesel through the filter and fuel rail. Saves clarting about with a bucket full of fuel. I'm going to use the vacuum system I bought years ago that is used to draw oil up through the dipstick pipe on an oil change, but never used it. I'm sure you have to remove the filler cap before you bleed the system as well.

Thinking of having a go... Powerful UK video here (on an earlier car) that shows the job from start to finish but...

The new filter is primed simply by allowing the fuel pump to fill it before starting the engine... seems to work but of course, it is just previously filtered fuel already upstream of the filter. After a few moments of engine running it stops - the second video shows how they get it running again.

An easy job made difficult by not priming the new filter...

The Powerful UK video shows how NOT to replace the fuel filter, and definitely how NOT bleed out any air. I couldn't believe those fools actually cracked an injector pipe and cranked the engine over. With the sort of pressures involved with a common rail system, this sort of thing is just stupid, and shows a complete lack of understanding for the vehicle they were working on. What I do is simply drown the new filter in a container of clean diesel till the bubbles stop & connect up. Works every time.

They obviously haven't read the JLR FL2 workshop manual. Information on how to bleed the system is clearly described. It works for me every time with little mess and near-zero chance of getting dirt in the engine side of the filter. Jules

Best advice is make sure you buy a genuine filter Jaguar x-type sport gone
Jaguar x-type 2.2d sport one of my best cars ever sadly gone
Freelander 2 GS auto 2008 most unreliable ever ! gladly gone
Freelander 2 GS manual 2013 only time will tell !

I always use this cheap tool to prime the filter before starting the car, connected to port A.
Works really well, never had a problem with it.
