Freelander insurance problem.

Not sure if I am in the right place to post this & apologise if I am not.

I am currently taking out an insurance policy as my old expires on 12 August. The company I was with last year put up the premium from £283 to £471 for this year, yikes whats all that about. Anyway called them & said dont auto renew as too much.

Went to a comparison website & got it for £250. Thought great all sorted.

I have now had an email saying my premium is going up by £150 as I have an at fault accident, I certainly have not. I had a guy reverse into me last year while stationary, he admitted liability at the scene & to his insurers. I had a company call me called Elephant who were acting for the other party & asked if they could handle the case to get my car repaired. No reason to say no as long as I was not paying out.

They asked me to get a quote for the damage to my bumper & let them know what it was & then they would transfer the money to my bank account so I could get the car repaired at my convenience & pay the repairer.

The cost was £400 to respray the bumper which I had done a week or so later, I duly received the money then transferred it on to the sprayer. I notified my insurers at the time as I have to after an accident.

I made no claim on my insurance filled out no forms or paid out any excess.

Now the new insurer has said they are putting up the insurance by £150 because I have an at fault claim on the insurance database that I should have told them about, I told them about the accident & that I was not at fault but they are insisting that I am.

I have now got a letter from Elephant after I called them saying they paid out money in leu & are not disputing liability. New insurer has said at fault stands because they paid out money to me !!!!!!!!!! Elephant was nothing to do with me they were working for the other party, someone had to pay & it was not my insurer.

I have now got another letter from my current insurer saying it was put down as notification only & no claims is allowed. The lady said on the phone she could see it was not my fault thats why its notification only. What am I to do now if the new insurer still insists it is my fault, really at a loss with this.

Sorry its gone on a bit but I am fuming.

So it's the proposed new insurer that's making the fuss? In which case surely the answer is to go elsewhere. However if the insurers at the time of the incident have put it through as a fault claim then you're possibly have to speak to them to get the official,records straight.
Did you try negotiating the renewal quote with the previous insurers?
Personally I've found comparison sites are useful but only for that purpose

Hi,
I would keep trying other insurers making sure you mention the accident also note the Time, Date and Name of person you talk to as most like call will be recorded
Then
If no better premiums decide to cancel or not the new insurance, as Sidthecat says, you have istr? 14 days ?

Sounded like it's gone down as knock for knock but your current insurers say all good so ?

My current insurers have just put the accident down as notification only & have not altered my NCB.

They have paid no money out & tell me I was not at fault, the other parties insurance handlers said they would not dispute liability paid for the damage to my car & my insurer paid nothing to the other guy for whatever repairs he had to have done.

The other party admitted liability at the scene & when his insurers called me they said he was on the phone at the time saying to them it was his fault.

According to the new insurer its still my fault ????????

£250 for your insurance seems a rather low quote.

I wait for the renewal notice each year, haruuuumph and splutter a bit and then find something lower on Go Compare / Compare the Market etc. Then I go back to my existing insurer and tell them who and how much I am leaving them for... Every year they knock a tenner off the price I am leaving them for and I stay with the original company (about five years now).


As an aside, telling your insurance company about non fault, non claim bumps has the effect of statistically making you a higher risk to insure. For that reason alone, the risk algorithms insurance companies use will increase premiums.


You still have time to shop around and try to beat your existing company down.

It seems it's only the new insurers that are creating this problem; common sense would say to go elsewhere surely? If you found them through a comparison site, choose another company from that list. As ReggiePerrin has said, £250 does sound very cheap - who was that with?

I am 66 with no at fault accidents no convictions etc. I could have got one for £217.

The £250 insurance is with protected no claims legal protection & nil excess (only compulsory £200).

There were others around the same price & just picked that one at random. Have told the new insurers to refund my deposit & forget about insuring me if they are going down the route they are going,

I will drop a line to the insurance ombudsman as well, as I see it they are calling me a liar & making an accident my fault when I am clearly not at fault in the pursuit of profit.

agree again with Sidthecat ^ ask for refund and look elsewhere

have you tried APlan sponsors on here Question I have not insured with them but they have been well worth speaking to (their real people Laughing ) just could not beat my renewal

Another for Aviva last year £180 this year £200 protected and no voluntary excess

Insurers often see it that as you were involved in an accident, that you are a higher risk.

It does not matter whose fault it was.

I am stationary & a car on the road in front decides to reverse back into me without looking or hearing my horn that I was frantically sounding. Hardly my fault.

Anyways some good news the new insurers have finally called my current (soon to be old insurer) to find out what has happened & now they say everything is fine & have reset my insurance to the original price of £250.

Only took about 5 hours in phone calls a dozen emails to the new insurer the old insurer & the insurer that paid out for the damage (the other parties insurance) to my car.

I also have a VW van which is due around end of September & hopefully the insurance data base will have been updated by then, dont want to have to go thru this again.

Let's say this happens to you regularly. Shocked

From the insurers point of view, will see you as a higher risk.

Maybe stay at home on days ending with 'y', or leave more space. Cool

Good grief £250 would be nice.

60 year old, had my first accident in ten years this year (other driver came out of a side road - and admitted liability) £890 before the accident on a Disco Sport, and that was the cheapest after a couple of hours searching.

Wifes two year old MG3 is £118 for the year, so not a high crime area.

OK business use (travel to different sites on occasion), but the 240bhp engine instead of the 180 added over £200.

Would I have opted for the 240 if I had known, probably not, would I go back to a 180 - no way. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

It may be that the third party insurers or your previous insurers have recorded it as fault on the CUE database which is shared by all insurers and how your new insurers would have been notified.

Elephant as in the insurer? If so this is part of Admiral I believe, along with Bell insurance - the three you usually see popping up on comparison sites. Or a claims handling company? - some insurers share your details with 3rd parties, resulting in these "have you had a n accident calls", we don't share data with 3rd parties at all and don't allow our insurers to either, unfortunately no control over the insurers for the other car involved.

A claim is fault if YOUR insurers have paid out, as if non fault then they would be recovering funds from a third party. So may be worth speaking to your previous insurers and asking their claims team how it's been closed - if it is still open (i.e. not all funds have been recovered so they're currently out of pocket) then it shows as fault until closed as non-fault.

Ring your insurers at the time of the accident to ask if claim has been closed non-fault and if it has, they should be able to submit that in writing.
