Decisions decisions

Currently running Michelin Cross Climates on 235/65/R17, but need to replace them as the shoulder is worn excessively on the nearside front.

I've been trawling the threads for a few days trying to get a consensus but still as confused as before.
I like the slightly more chunky tread pattern of the Michelin Latitude Cross, along with the Pirelli Scorpion AT (ATR not seeming to be a currently available model). Although I have also read about tyre wear with Pirellis.

GG At3's get a lot of good remarks, but I see they're confusing rated differently for their wet braking depending on the speed rating?



I do wonder if the Cross Climates are a little overkill for the weather normally seen, and I do find that their tread pattern seems to collect stones, or the top dressing of roads. My local agencies seem to think "resurfacing" a road just means throwing a load of chippings on top of whatever was there.

are you getting your tracking checked/sorted first Question

Big believer in true Winters or running All season tyres all year round Thumbs Up

Think the At3s are 3SF marked and would think the different ratings are connected to the ply's/make up of the tyre to give the higher speed rated one better ratings, I would go for the V if you go the AT3 route

Only down side of them istr is they get noisier the more they wear Confused

Thumbs Up .
my first ever FL2 and I did keep it longer than most other cars!
But its now gone way up Norf

I had the Pirelli Scorpion Atr's on my old Fl2 and couldn't fault them , I think they maybe discontinued , can't comment on the General At3's . I've got General Grabber Gt's on my present Fl2 and am really impressed.

I've run General Grabber GTs for a year now, and left them on the car over winter (despite having a set of winter tyres and wheels). In all respects I've found them to be as good as the previous Continentals and better for noise and steering feel, and if anything better for ride comfort.

I paid £85 each for 235/65/17, so they were good value too!

Forgot to say about the General Grabber GTs.

At first sight they may look to be directional, but they are not. I checked with the General Tyre Technical department to confirm this. So it's easier to swap the tyres around to even out wear than with directional tyres.

All the Land/ Range Rover vehicle’s used on the Land Rover experience days have factory fitted all season tyres fitted unless you do some serious off roading there is no need for anything more.

Inclined to agree, Jack. Only "benefits" from the more "agressive" treads seem to be more noise and worse economy. Had enough of that driving military LRs and Bedfords! Rolling Eyes

Thanks all so far. Some great points to consider.

The Michelin CCs have been fine so far. I just wasn't sure how they might perform if I need to do some light off-roading, and didn't act as gravel vacuum devices.

I had a Forester for many years and ran that on the Cross Climates - I'm in SE London so obviously don't need to worry about the sort of weather some of the 'up north' members might experience, but really couldn't fault them. In fact I'd seriously consider fitting them in place of the Scorpion Zeros which I believe are the factory fits as I don't seem to get anywhere near the mileage on them

The wife's Fl2 has Michelin latitude cross on which are a good all round tyre , they've been on the best part of 3 years and still look like new .

At a basic level, a softer rubber compound grips the road well but wears faster than a harder rubber compound which will grip the road less well.The trade off is between grip and wear.

It’s a bit more complicated than that because the tread pattern and compound ingredients all play a significant part but It comes down to balancing the design priorities and parameters for a given tyre or brand.

I remember very many years ago having an Austin Healey Frog Eye Sprite that came on Michelin X tyres which never wore out, but it was like driving a bar of soap in the wet....

Another good question is “where does your tyre go”?

As a tyre wears the tread depth reduces from say 8mm to 2mm. That’s quite a volume of very fine rubber wear particles. Multiply that by the millions of tyres consumed each year …..

Engine emissions are tightly controlled, but they are not the only particulate pollutants going into the air, onto the roads and fields, and being washed into water courses…..
